Subject: Kia commercial song?

Written By: Lisa (Guest) on 09/09/02 at 03:30 p.m.

Does anyone know what song is used in the latest Kia car commercial?  The commercial is the one with the girl that is going through the different boyfriends in time (ie: one's a hippie, one's on his cell phone) - at the end, she runs out of gas & a cute tow truck guy comes up to help her.  We can't think of what this song is and it's driving us nuts!!

The song was also sampled in the background of Mariah Carey's 'Heartbreaker' song.  Thank you!!

I know there is a KIA commercial with the song "Genius Of Love" by the Tom Tom Club. Not sure if that is the one you are talking about. ???

Mariah Carey's Heartbreaker samples the tom tom cats genius of love, so by common sense Im guessing that that was the song in the commercial...I know Ive seen this commerical, bbut I dont remember what the song was...I know it wasnt "Going up country" by Canned heat...God damnit, now I got that stuck in my head....anyway, its the Tom Tom club  (which btw featured Chris Franz and Tina Wayworth of Talking Heads fame)

I thought she sampled that song in "Fantasy", not "Heartbreaker".  Correct me if I'm wrong.

You're correct, TX.  And so are you, lebiew15.  "Genius of Love" is sampled in Mariah's "Fantasy," not "Heartbreaker."

You guys are so smart!  Thank you!!!
Yes - it was Fantasy (sorry 'bout that).
I would've never figured that out on my own.

oops, your right....it was fantasy...but I have a confession to make...Im not at all a fan of Mariah carey, or the tom tom club, I just knew that fact (but apparently I didnt remember it well) sorry for the confusion

I believe the song in the commercial is the original "Genius of Love" by the Tom-Tom Club and not "Fantasy" or "Heartbreaker". But "Fantasy" is the Mariah Carey song that has the sample of "Genius...". I hope this clears up any confusion. ;)

I'm sorry if this has already been posted, but a sample of Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love" was used in Mariah Carey's song, "Fantasy", and in her song, "Heartbreaker". The music critics made fun of Mariah Carey for this reason when they did a review of the album that "Heartbreaker" came out on. Also, the girl in the commercial is Stacey Scowley, a B-movie actress.

Mark ;)

Don't know about any reviews - but if so, they're wrong - because officially, the songwriting credits on "Heartbreaker" are: Mariah Carey/Lincoln Chase/Jeff Cohen/Shirley Ellis/Shawn Carter/Michael Walden. Cohen and Walden wrote Stacy Lattisaw's "Attack of the Name Game", which is the tune "Heartbreaker" actually samples, hence their songwriting credit on Carey's song. Chris Frantz/Tina Weymouth wrote Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love". So if Mariah really had used the TTC song in "Heartbreaker", don't you think Frantz & Weymouth would've sued her for royalties by now? ???

OK, here is the quote from the review I read, back when Heartbreaker came out. It wasn't Entertainment Weekly that it was in, like I thought, it was Rolling Stone.

Here is the quote:

On the first single, "Heartbreaker," which (like 1995's "Fantasy") owes its musical grounding to Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love," the singer is at her most insinuating: nasal, silken, declarative, riding the percolating beat.

I guess I was misinformed by a journalist who didn't have his facts straight. Although, it could have some sort of sample from "Genius of Love," but he probably just got it wrong.

Hmmm, I'll admit I'd never read that particular review in Rolling Stone before, and I give you credit for making the effort to dig it up. :-) That being said, I honestly don't know what the writer was attempting to imply, although I agree it appears he's trying to make it sound like "Heartbreaker" also samples "Genius of Love". He must've been "thinking" w/ just his ears and not his eyes, lol... :P

Oh, and trust me, it's no secret that those magazines get their facts right only half the time, anyway - that's today's journalism for ya... ;)

However, I won't rule out the possibility that Carey sampled "Genius of Love" or the TTC elsewhere on her Rainbow album, as I don't own a copy of it myself, nor do I have the entire album credits handy. I have a feeling that may be where the error was made...

Tom Tom Club Rules!  I've always been a huge fan of theirs....they were an offshoot of the Talking Heads (Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz are bass player/drummer for TH, not to mention married to each other).
