Subject: Hotel California-Eagles, interpretation anyone?

Written By: Shorti on 11/09/02 at 00:12 a.m.

Hey can anyone out there help me with the real meaning of the song Hotel California by the Eagles? I heard it was actually about drugs, is that true??  ???

Although I don't know the true interpretation of Hotel California, Don Henley told Rolling Stone magazine that Hotel California was about "facing some of the harsh realities of fame and life in Hollywood."  I speculate that drugs may be a part of it, as well as sex and drinking etc.  Believe it is more about the excesses and the lifestyle.

Well, I thought it was about him in drug rehab, but that fits too.

I was pretty sure "Hotel California" was a Vietnam reference.

A Vietnam reference? How'd you come up with that?

I'm not bashing on you...as a fan of the written word and metaphor, I'd like to know how you equate Vietnam to Hotel California 8)

My dictionary doesn't contain the word colitas. I assume it's a pluralized drug...

Found an interesting definition to the word "colitas".  From what I have read the word translates to "little tails"  and that this word has been used to refer to the bud of the pot plant.  Found a site that said that Henley/ Frey got this term from their Mexican American road manager.

didn't this come on the messageboard before?

the straight dope article about colitas I think answers what Don Henley thinks the term meant.. I think someone told me on amiright that it was a flower of come sort..

as for the rest of the song.. the Vietnam reference is because people assume the line "you can always check in, but you can never check out".. and there's a few other weird references in there (like the part with "stab it with their steely knives, but you just can't kill the beast")...

of course I've heard the last line I mentiond used as a reason the song is about the devil.. the inner album cover (it was a gatefold on the original release) has a strange looking picture of the inside of a hotel lobby with a bunch of people who looked slightly sinister.. it was a very unnatural looking pose.

however Henley has stated on several occasions it's about the hedanism of the 70s and the rampant drug use..

I've just loved how this song has evolved it's own meanings over the years

A few years ago, my brother went to California and he was so excited that he was going to stay in the Hotel California. He was bragging to everyone about it. When he told our dad, he said, "yeah, so?" My brother just laughed and said, "Different generation." lol

I dated a girl who's stepdad was in Vietnam, and I believe he said "Hotel California" was a Vietnam Reference to Vietnam itself (you can never leave...the war itself), dealing with the psychological trauma.  This was a few years back, so I'll see if I can find anything to substantiate that.
