Subject: What the Eagles' song Hotel California means

Written By: Victoria on 11/29/02 at 10:57 a.m.

Many people have debated about what "Hotel Calicfornia," the Eagles 1977 song means.  I can definitely tell you that everything you have heard about it, from it's about the occult, to satanism, is untrue.  The Eagles are the only people who know what the song is really about and what they were thinking at the time they composed it.  I have had the opportunity to search for this song's meaning, and after searching long and hard, I have finally figured it out.  The song is about the glory of 1976-1977.  The glory of the greatest decade, the 70's.  It is a metaphor for how life was like back in those days.  It is not about a whorehouse, or a satanic cult.  It has nothing to do with the hotel in Todos Santos, which many people thought the Eagles had visited.  All the rumors you have heard all lies, big, fat LIES!  The truth is that "Hotel California" has absolutely nothing to do with any of that.  It is simply a metaphor for the 70's.  People always want to have fun by spreading untrue rumors.  So, I want to clear it all up.  The song is about the glory of the 70's.  That is its one true meaning.

Without researching it at all I came to the conclusion that it was about a love/hate relationship with California. Most of the band aren't from California, and lines like "this could be heaven or this could be hell" and "you can check out any time you like but you'll never leave" make me think the song is about California and its attractions. People are drawn there expecting to find something, maybe they find it; maybe they don't.
And then there's the line "we haven't had that spirit here since 1969" Wine isn't a spirit (is it?) Perhaps they feel the 60s were the glory years?
