Subject: Possible new feature..

Written By: ChuckyG on 12/16/02 at 04:05 p.m.

I don't think this will be hard, so I'm throwing it out there to see if anyone else thinks it is of any use..

I was thinking of breaking down the parody archive, into a secondary listing by date entered. So each day a batch of parodies were added to the site, there could be a page listing them out. So if you wanted to see all the parodies entered from September 2001 to December 2001, you could..

anyone see any use in something like that?

Methinks it's a good idea.  It sorta helps to show an evolution of the site, and also gives an idea of who has been consistently contributing.  I think it would be good to show a shift of attitudes and themes being parodied (except for Tong, but that's another story ;)), as one artist fades out of the limelight and another zips in.  Plus it might decrease the number of parody listings on each page of the archive...like the "S" section in the 1990s parodies is like 70 titles long and it takes a while to sift through those.

This is the coolest thing.  Now I can see what other parodies were posted at the same time I posted my first ones in July 2001.  Thanks for putting this together!  And it's amazing how there only used to be 3 or 4 submissions every 2 or 3 days, and now there is like 20 or 30 submissions EACH day..

Very cool feature.  Seems my first was April 21, 2001 (aside from I've Got To Pee Now, which went to the 80s site several years earlier)

I'm actually playing around with trying to re-create the voting tallies, in such a way that I can present a day-by-day dataset of which songs made the top daily/monthly/overall voting results..

does anyone remember when I added the voting stuff? From what I can tell, it was sometime in October of 2000.. which is strange, since I thought it was earlier than that...

anyways.. I should be able to do a few things once the data is created.. I should be able to give a day-by-day breakdown of each top five. I should also be able to tell, for an individual parody, when it made a top five, it's peak position, and how many weeks it was in the top five.  And, if I can do that.. then I can probably extract the same info by parody author, or maybe even performer (ie. which performer's songs seem to get voted on the best).

unfortunately.. it takes around 2 hours to create each dataset (ie. the last two years worth of monthly voting tallies, and then the weekly, and then the overall).. on the positive side.. I should be able to better mine the voting results for interesting stats

Kinda... there was a period where the voting totals weren't being updated.. I had problems with a web hosting provider, which resulted in the totals not running.. the votes however were still tracked.. so if anything, this should let us see who made the top 5 during those periods..

I am however re-thinking my approach.. I was going to generate a seperate page for each days totals.. but when you think about it, that's like 800+ pages, and even more than that if you split them by weekly/monthly/overall or do them for the top 50 totals... so I think I might try writing a script, that lets you select a day you want, and then display that day's results..

it also appears, that based on the original design of the voting tally program, positions will not be quite the same as what originally appeared on the day voting tallies came out.. for instance.. I just ran today's voting tallies, and I noticed a couple of songs aren't in quite the same spots.. turns out the voting script was counting all votes up until the point the script was run, usually around 1 or 2 am in the morning.. the new voting tally script has a cut off of 12 am.. so if extra votes occured, it might have moved a song up or down..

since I'm going to change the script tonight, to prevent this from happening in the future, it won't be a problem with tallies going forward. It will however be a problem with the historical data.. I don't think it's really possible to code for all the possabilities though.

and it looks like it was sometime in August of 2000 I started grabbing voting results.. I keep forgetting that I have to number months starting with zero.. the voting results start with the September 2000 data (just to make it easier for me to create stuff around)..

and even though I've been able to generate the daily voting tallies.. it's probably going to be a while before I make something meaningful out of all the stuff..

I think the easiest thing to do, will be to determine whether a song has ever made one of the top 10 lists (I keep forgetting, I increased them from top fives.. so that's another thing we'll discover about the older parodies, since there are probably parodies which never charted, but will now)... I could add something on the authors page about which parodies reached the top 10... or maybe even place something on the regular indexes? or the parody itself?

although, I do get nervous about over-using the voting data.. I've tried to maintain it as a tool for the parody authors, not as a popularity contest... when you start using it to distinguish certain parodies from others, you invite cheating from parody authors...

it predates the "date stamp" I started adding to parodies.. you probably emailed it to me back when I still added them by hand..
