Subject: Mesterious 80s Hair Metal tune

Written By: MAX on 12/31/02 at 00:53 a.m.

I need a certain 80s Hair Metal tune to complete my recent CD collection. Unfortunately I never knew the name of the song or the Rock group that played it. I've been searching the Net for 2 years now, and even sent out dozens of e-mails in search of this thing with no luck. Here's all the info. I can give you on it:

I heard the tune in 1986 on a homemade compilation tape that I happened to come across that had songs from Whitesnake, TNT, Poison, and about a dozen other well known 80s Metal groups, but lost the tape shortly afterwards. If I'm not mistaken; KLOS (an L.A. radio station) used the very beginning of the song ("UUHH!!") at the beginning of a medley that they used to promote the station. It had the sound of a loud L.A. Hair Metal band. The lead singer of the group sounded like the guy from Kix or Vinnie Vincent Invasion (Mark Slaughter) and tended to shout more than sing. The tune had a slow rythem like that of "Turn it up" from Autograph, but a little more edgy like Vinnie Vincent, and a bit loud and in your face like something from David Lee Roth. And it definitely had a touch of a Glam party sound like that of Poison but kicks ass over any Glam tune that I'm aware of. I'm more certain about the chorus than the beginning lyrics but here's how it went:

"UUHH!! (begins the song, the guitar power chords follow)
I am a Rock! Living inside of you!
At night you try to set me free!
I am the brains of everything that you do!
Just get me started you'll see!....

(chorus)
I am the Tomorrow! Yea, yea!
I am the Tomorrow! UUHH!!
LONG! LIVE! ROCK! Long live Rock and Ro-ll!
LONG! LIVE! ROCK! Long live Rock and Ro-ll!"

The lead guitarist ended his solo and the song with a wild sound effect similar to the one Eddy Van Halen did at the end of his solo in "I'll wait" (which sounded kind of like a rapid fire lazer blaster in an arcade game), and made his guitar dance with riffs like he was just having a blast, as opposed to trying to out shred everybody or imitate somebody else's style. This was definitely not a remake of Blackmore's (Rainbow) tune "Long live Rock and Roll" like the ones from Gamma Ray and Lizzy Bordan; it was an original.

One last clue: Only one person so far seemed to recognize the tune. He said that he saw the video on VH-1 and that the lead singer had "the most freaking frizzy hair" he'd ever seen. It was so long ago that he couldn't recall the name of the song or the group.

This tune was one of the best I'd ever heard. I can't rest until I find it. If anybody can help me out here I'd be in your debt.

Autograph was one of the bands featured on VH-1 "One hit wonders/ Metal mahum with their one and only hit "Turn it up". It's a timeless tune though and just about every other 80s Hair Metal compilation has it so I guess their still making money on royalties.

"Turn Up The Radio" was Autographs only hit, but I really like "Send Her To Me" too. :)

80s Rockstar: I only wish it were that easy. That tune on the movie "Rockstar" played by Steel Dragon was another remake of Blackmore's (from Rainbow) song entitled "Long live Rock and Roll", like the ones from Lizzy Bordan and Gamma Ray (although I think Steel Dragon's version sounded better than the others, even Rainbow's).

Steel Dragon's singer had more bass to his voice than the singer of the song I described, kinda like a cross between Ron Keel and the singer for Armored Saint with a touch of David Coverdale. He sounded good but no, it wasn't him.

80sRockstar: Thanks for the compliment! I just hope that Metal (80s style) will make a comeback in this country real soon. Most of the junk I hear on the radio stations anymore make me just want to turn it off. Maybe then Great White's best CDs (Shot in the dark, Once Bitten, Twice Shy, and Hooked) will come back in print. Unfortunately only their S/T and Psycho City (their last good CD) are still in print. And yet all of Poison's and Guns & Roses stuff is still in print. That ain't right!

AMAZING! I mostly got my wish: I was checking out CDUniverse the other night and guess what? Great White's "Once Bitten", "Twice Shy" and "Hooked" are back in print! AAAAHELLYEAYAH!!!! Unfortunately "Shot in the dark" (arguably their best!) doesn't seem to be back in print yet. Hopefully it will be soon.
