Subject: I'm confused.. Avril Lavigne.. punk?

Written By: ChuckyG on 01/03/03 at 11:02 a.m.

who exactly started calling this stuff she does punk music? I grew up on the Clash, who were considered sell-outs at the time, and well.. this one sounds like Britney Spears to me.. heavily produced pop trash...

am I the only one who is confused about this "punk" label being applied to her?

same here! Avril Lavigne will always be sugarcoated...darn there's no adjective to say how lyrically dumb it is!

Heh heh. I don't mind Avril actually. Any chick wielding a guitar gets marks in my book. She's not punk though. The thing about "punk" is that most people who use it don't understand it. It basically becomes a convenient pigeon hole for anything with a rock beat that's one step away from the mainstream that kids with green hair listen to. Of course, Avril IS the mainstream, but calling it punk might get a few confused kids on the borderline listening to it as well, when normally they probably wouldn't.

;D

Id love to know who the bird brain who first called her punk is too.  She isnt punk, dont let that fool you.  She's Pop-rock, like michelle Branch.  Punk really has no definit sound, but calling her music punk is just wrong.  I want anyone who thinks she's punk to listen to "horses" by Patti Smith, and then try to tell me that Avril's punk.........
(And true, her non- "TRL friendly" songs are a touch harder, but she still isnt punk.)

oh wait, heres another example...I just looked at my picture there on the left, Blondie is considered by some to be punk (well, their more new wave actully, but anyway).  Listen to Parrell lines by Blondie (and skip track 10) and then try to tell me avrils punk

Preach it, Chuck!

Yes, if Avril simply admitted that she was pop-rock and not punk, I could listen to her with no problem. :-)

I don't think you can consider anyone who doesn't know who the Sex Pistols are punk. ;D

Avril is leading the darned pop-punk revelution, leading the pop(ular) kids to believe they are punk because they shop at Hot Topic and listen to rock. Avril Lavigne is Britney Spears playing riffs, and Good Charlotte is the Backstreet Boys strumming on the gee-tar. :P Dude, Pink is more punk than Avril. ;D

ETA: I admit to liking Good Charlotte before their "Young & The Hopeless" days. Anything before that album was listen-to-able. :D

It's my understanding that if you have even remotely posed with a skateboard...

From the Nov. '02 issue of MIX (sound mixing magazine):

When the red-hot songwriting/production team The Matrix — that's Lauren Christy, Graham Edwards and Scott Spock — was first approached about contributing a song to the debut album of an unknown Canadian teenager named Avril Lavigne, “Initially, we were told she was going to be kind of like Faith Hill,” says Spock with a chuckle. “She came in and sat on the couch, and we played her this song we'd written that was along the lines of a Faith Hill track, and she was not happy. She said, ‘I don't want to do this; I want to rock!’
... For The Matrix, it's just the latest triumph in a career that's shooting into a higher orbit every day. Other top artists they've worked with include Christina Aguilera, the Backstreet Boys, Ricky Martin, Nick Carter and Liz Phair.

What?  Not Agent Orange?  Not The Misfits, Bad Brains or even Butthole Surfers?  So much for writing those songs all by herself, too...

Avril will tell you herself that she isn't punk.  Or at least she will NOW.  She was calling herself punk a whole lot at the beginning of her career; now she's trying to say that the media labelled her punk even though she isn't, what with being played on MTV and all.  (See her letter to Rolling Stone, interview in y&m)  Or, to clarify, she will call her clothes and her lifestyle punk, but not her music.  Whatever, I say.  So what if she is or ain't punk?

What DOES bother me is that of all the girls being labelled the anti-Britney (Pink, Michelle, etc.), she seems to be the only one that thinks she IS.  She always putting down Britney in interviews, she talkin like she all that, she really damn annoying is what she is.  She's always talking about how she writes her own songs; well yeah, she did, with massive outside professional songwriting help.  Anyone could do that.  Britney Spears could do that.  Britney Spears HAS done that.  I ain't impressed, little girl.

Have you seen the lyric content in her songs? Kind of blah. I write better than that! Without "massive outside professional songwriting help"! I think anyone could write better than that without massive outside professional songwriting help.

Edited because while my writing might be better, my typing and grammar apparently aren't. :P

I can't understand this avril latrine thing either....... in the UK there's a radio station (Virgin/Vermin) who make a big deal of not playing pop-star stuff (ie.. britney, christina) and then play Pink and Latoilet records >:(

awful, i'm buying more cd's now...by decent bands ;D

Man,
I feel all this happening. It's all this cool music being called- grunge, rap-metal, and punk and all these teeny-bopperz come and destroy the names of music as it is.

Nirvana, Pearl Jam, A.I.C., Soundgarden- Introduced grunge

but

OLD NAVY, Tommy Boy, Preps- They have destryoed the style by taking it as their own

Rap-metal- showed us rap and rock could collide big time

but

Sellout bands (Limp Bizkit, Crazytown) gave it a bad name

Punk: The Clash, Sex Pistols- gave us the time of our lives

but

Avril and others destroyed punk, and made it into preppy-punk

She may be many things but she is definitely not punk. My stepson likes her music, but hopefully kids today will not get the impression that she is what "punk" is about. :-/

actully, Grunge was a direct progression from punk and New Wave.  Neil Young is considered by some as the first Grunge artist, but grunge as we know it (The Seattle sound) came around with bands like Temple of the dog, Nirvana, and mother love bone

Rap metal is a whole different story....rap metal can be traced back to Blondie in 1981 with their song "Rapture", and then to Aerosmith and RUn DMC's version of "Walk this way" in 1986, and then to Antrax and Public enemy's colaberation which I forget the name to....the first rap/rock fusion bands can be considered Faith no more, the Red hot chili Peppers, and the Beastie Boys..then later bands like Rage against the machine...but I agree, Limp Bizqet has given that genre a bad name (the whole so called "Nu-Metal" genre Im not too big a fan of)

Punk wasnt destroyed by Avril, and Ill tell you why..Real Punks know Avril isnt punk, and so their music isnt affected by hers....now the bands that are affecting punk, are a bunch of recent ones that claim to be "punk" but arent anymore than pure pop crap rock with bandmates that can only play 3 chords on a guitar and write halfassed lyrics and think that they are writing music.....  These bands are the likes of Blink 182, Sum 41, New Found Glory, NoFX, and the getup kids......they are the ones that ruined punk...now thank God for the most recent wave of Punk bands that will hopefully put an end to this wave of crap punk wannabees (the new bands are of course the likes of the Strokes, The Hives, The vines, the Black Rebel motorcycle club, and the White Strips, among others)
Some may argue that Punk was ruined from  1977 on and the introduction of the Sex Pistols.  (well, Ill admit it, I dont like the Sex Pistols, or the Circle Jerks or even the Dead Kennedys, but Id pick them over blink any day of the week)
THe best punk in my opinion: Proto-punk: THe NEw York Dolls, Patti Smith, Roxy Music, David Bowie, Television, MC5, Velvet underground, and Iggy Pop anfd the Stooges.....and Post punk/New Wave: U2, Blondie, Talking heads, REM, Clash(all of clash, not just after 77) Grunge, Green day and the replacments

The Get Up Kids killed punk?  That's a new one, what with them being an emo band and all.

And it's not like I'm a fan, but I'm really interested in hearing why NOFX deserves to be lumped in with New Found Glory.

Also, since when are The Strokes and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club punk?

get up kids are emo? when the hell did this come about? Everyone I know that likes the get up kids calls them punk..either way they suck in my opinion

NoFX desearve to be listed with NFG because I dont like either and I think that both are ruining punk

Strokes and BRMC have always been punk, theyre a throw back to early punk like the Ramones, and even earlier stuff...they are a combination of the ramones, early stones, early who and New YOrk Dolls..and theyre are awesome!  They are considered by most to be punk, and while that really isnt a compliment now, its what they are..the real definition of punk, not the NFG, Blink 182 definition of punk.....real punk, like it should sound like

does that answer your questions?

I have never once heard the Get Up Kids called punk.  If NOFX are killing punk (and they may well be), it's in a completely different way than New Found Glory.  The Strokes, while a decent band, aren't really punk.  The White Stripes and the Hives... maybe, if you're pushing the definition.  Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and The Vines, definitely not.  Most of the time I've heard their music called "garage rock revival," not punk.

Garage rock revival is punk...proto punk was garage rock........
I dont know about Get up kids, Ive always considered them punk, but your saying theyre emo...can anybody else put some imput in this, what do you call them?  Id just like to know if Ive been making fun of them the wrong way all this time.....

NoFX and NFG are diferent bands, but I grouped them together because theyre both doing stuff thats resulting inthe same thing....

NoFX? Get Up Kids? What kind of crack are you on, Billy? lol.

As for the Sum41 and New Found Glory, I personally like them, and at least they don't pose and actually admit they are "pop-punk" (or in NFG's case, pop-rock. NFG is far from punk.)

blink-182 has turned from once-greatness to pathetic suckiness. Thank goodness each member is pursuing a different project.

According to allmusic.com, Sex Pistols are Punk, Sum41 are Punk-pop and Punk Revival, NFG is emo, Get Up Kids are emo, Nirvana is Grunge, NoFX is Skatepunk and Punk Revival, and Avril is TEEN POP. HA!

wow, Allmusicguide.com is calling Get up kids emo...damn, well ok, I guess all my idiot cohorts who listen to them are wrong...Ive heard them, I thought it sounded like punk, but whatever..either waytheyre ruining music lol...

But now theyre calling NFG emo?  Now thats just wrong.  NFG calls themselves punk..not emo (but yet, Avril calls herself punk..hmmmm) I actully need to know a bit on NFG because my good friend, and parody co-author Keith Kamer hails from their home town (Corel Springs, Fl) and is a huge fan of them...so I had to do my research in order to disagree with him....what the hell is Skatepunk?  THat sounds like what Avril calls herself! lol

you know, Im glad I got the info on this now, cause I was planning on writing a "Whats wrong with music" article on them, but now Im gunna have to rethink it..lol..thanks guys

BTW: Just because Im too lazy to look myself, what does Allmusicguide.com call the Strokes, the vines and BRMC?

She's a part of that group that is what I like to call bubblegum punk. Think Good Charlotte as well. It's not even punk is the thing. Maybe I should call it bubblegum skater music. Truth is, any kid on a skateboard wouldn't listen to either because they think the artists "sold out". I remember when the skater kids loved Green Day until Dookie came out and was played everywhere. The whole group of green hair kids annoy me. They think they are so independent and the only one doing it (Avril???) However, It's been happening for a long long time. Hey green haired kids, go take a bath and get rid of the tounge ring. You are now just as mainstream as the rest of us...you just look a little more dirty. You aren't the first to discover Operation Ivy and Lagwagon. (sorry, Avril justs sparks the feeling in me)

What i'd give just for Jonny Rotten to give her a beating.....
