What's the song about ?
I think darkness is his depression
he keeps having .

I know it's a dream he cannot get away
from ?

But what is the sound of silence ?

I always thought it was about deafness but I could be wrong.

Here goes...

This song was written in the late 1960's, when the peace movement and other movements were gaining momentum.

The "Sound of Silence" referred to people not speaking out, not speaking what their conscience felt.  The song was about the need for people to say what was on their minds to correct the wrongs that were going on (mainly at that time, the 'Nam war and discrimination against blacks in the US of A).  The actual "Sound of Silence", then, was a guilty conscience.

There is a similar lyric in a Matchbox 20 song entitled "Cody""

There's a squeek hinge on the back gate
To let us know if he comes around
But I don't sleep that good anyway
And if you've ever heard that silence, it's a God-awful sound.

Quoting:
