Subject: amIright Idol: Open enrollement for contestants

Written By: ChuckyG on 02/10/03 at 11:27 a.m.

If you would like to compete, please post your parody on amiright and then respond in this thread with the title, your name and a LINK to the parody once it has been posted to the site. Please don't post here until your parody has been accepted.

Rules:

Parodies must be approved by Friday, which means you will need to submit them before 6 AM EST on Friday.

Any parody posted to the site can be considered (no need to write a new parody if you have one on the site already).

You must post your entry in this thread by Midnight EST on Friday for it to be considered.

You must create a registered user account for posting, please do not post your parody with a guest account.

For the first contest, any topic is fine. Future rounds will require specific topics or songs.

The judges will then post their voting results over the weekend, and the results posted here.  The winners will be
required to post new parodies each week until eliminated.

The parodies with the highest combined scores will advance.

In case of a tie, the judges will vote again on just the tied entries to determine which goes forward and which doesn't. If that results in a second tie, I will make the final decision on who advances and who doesn't.

I know the real American Idol allows the public to vote off people, but it's too difficult to prevent duplicate voting and cheating (since the sample size is too small). So we're going to just use a judging panel for this contest. The public is of course to post messages about what they think of the contest, and who should win, etc. The judges are of course free to ignore or consider whatever they read.

make sure you pick FUNNY parodies for your initial entry. One of the rounds will be for a serious parody, but since the initial round will require FUNNY for a voting subject, you'll need to have a good humorous parody for an entry.

here's my entry about a bad business deal:
http://www.amiright.com/parody/2000s/puddleofmudd21.shtml

I HOPE the judges sing the entries along to the originals...
because a lot of our parodies don't seem to match the original timing the same way Weird Al's don't..
i.e. "American Pie" : "I can still remember how"
compared to "The Saga Begins: "in a galaxy far away"

but when you do it out loud it fits just fine :D

that and a lot of them are way funnier if you're singing along than not.

I agree :)  I have a lot of fun singing along to my parodies to the mp3 as I write them just to get the pacing down.  We should make our own mp3s at some point and ask if Chucky can make an mp3 section :D

Best of luck, rage.

while I'd love to host mp3s, it's not practical unless I'm making money from the website to pay for the bandwidth I'd spend..

if people make mp3s, they should try posting them at mp3.com.. though from what I understand, parodies require payment to be listed, since the music is being used.. something like $40 a song.

To the above comment about pacing...

On EVERY comment I have left and message posted in my oh 8 months at amiright... I've stressed pacing, and I think it's important to stick ALMOST directly to the mold. Even weird al, after that follows that songs pacing immeasurably well. that said, I'm judging pacing like I think it should be judged, so, it may make people mad, but I'm being fair to everyone. 1 or 2 liberties is ok. BUT, If I have to stutter every other verse to make that extra syllable fit in (if you sang it to me it would be different) I get distracted.

you might have to ask them about that.. I can't really be sure.. considering there are college acapella groups I've heard doing popular tunes, and recording them on CD, I would imagine that helps get around having to pay much in the way of royalties..
