Subject: Donnie Iris/Cellarful of Noise

Written By: FOXVOX on 03/12/03 at 09:12 p.m.

Does anyone remember the song "Samantha" by Cellarful of Noise (f/ Donnie Iris) ?  I have never seen this on CD, just vinyl & would be most appreciative if anyone could direct me to a file of that song.

Thanks in advance!

Good luck. I've searched and searched for it myself to no avail. I only have the 45 and it's in terrible shape. CBS Associated made really crappy 45s. I'll assume you've tried searching under the subtitle "What You Gonna Do?" as well?

You assume correctly, my friend.
You can FIND the song on his website, but can't download it.

(You're right about CBS... subject to major cue-burn!)

Have you tried searching for information on Mark Avsec instead of Donnie Iris as well?

Yes.  Thanks for the suggestion, though.  :)

Have you tried finding Iris or Avsec, going to their place and beating the crap out of them until they either give you a copy on CD or agree to live in your house performing the song live on your command?

No, but I believe in strength by numbers... When can you be ready to go with?  ;)

Say the word and I'm there. I haven't beaten up an Ohio rock star since Eric Carmen and I tangled back in 1975. Lucky for him the O'Jays were there to save him.

Here in the U.S., Cellarful of Noise's 1988 album, Magnificent Obsession, was issued only on vinyl LP and cassette. I have two copies on cassette myself (one of them still sealed!). :-) Unfortunately, to this day, it has never been re-issued on CD anywhere in the world...

Don't know which web site you're referring to above (Donnie Iris's official site has been down for a while now), but have you tried his unofficial fan site, www.parallel-time.com ? Just go to the "Song Clips" section; he has the entire CoN album available on mp3 there, including "Samantha (What You Gonna Do?)" and the other tunes DI sang lead on for that project (check out "Temper, Temper" while you're at it!). If you're having trouble, just e-mail the site owner, Glenn, and I'm sure he can get you the song. I've contributed info to his site in the past, and I can tell you he's a cool guy... :-)

Are you kidding? I was lucky I found the 45. My hometown music store SUCKED! :)

THANK you for posting that site, though. I've been looking for that song myself. My gratitude is immense.

That's the same site I found the song on earlier.
We played the song from a CD but it was a radio trade magazine compilation that came out bi-weekly.  Heck, it took me years to remember the name "Cellarful of Noise", I just recalled that it was Donnie Iris and the song was awesome but it's hard to describe it to someone as a bunch of 'major 5ths'...

I appreciate your knowledge and interest on this!

Yep, sounds like they must've been behind the times, too. That's because when "Samantha" was released in the Winter of '88, cassette singles were already outselling vinyl 45s here in the U.S. So that means it's likely more copies were actually pressed on cassette than vinyl...

No sweat - big DI fan here... :-)

Interesting. Just out of curiosity, which "radio trade magazine" are you referring to? :-)

Magnificent Obsession was actually CoN's second album; a self-titled debut had been released three years earlier, in 1985. However, DI didn't take part in the '85 album. And actually, he didn't sing the vocals on all of the tracks on the '88 album, either. The "group" was formed primarily as a side project by DI's keyboardist, Mark Avsec. BTW, were you ever able to get the file for the song, as NewRomantic did? ???

Yes.  I already knew of that site & the accommpanying file.  I was actually looking for an original copy but as you & NewRo have pointed out:  it was not released on the CD format.   :(

The trade mag was called "Hitmakers", based in El Segundo, CA.  I don't know if it is still in publication.  I still have a few other compilation CDs that they put out.
