Subject: The most beautiful song lyrics are poetry...

Written By: Brian Keith O'Hara on 03/14/03 at 09:13 a.m.

The best song writers, are poets, who get look inside ourselves and teach us that sight is the ability to see, vision is the ability to see through other people's eyes. John Lennon in "Imagine" is the single greatest example, Gordon Lightfoot mastered the art and was it's greatest practitioner.

Candle On the Water

I'll be your candle on the water
My love for you will always burn
I know you're lost and drifting,
But the clouds are lifting,
Don't give up, you have somewhere to turn.

I'll be your candle on the water
Till every wave is warm and bright
My soul is there beside you,
Let this candle guide you
Soon you'll see a golden stream of light.

A cold and friendless tide has found you
Don't let the stormy darkness pull you down
I'll paint a ray of hope around you
Circling in the air, lighted by a prayer.

I'll be your candle on the water
This flame inside of me will grow
Keep holding on, you'll make it
Here's my hand, so take it

Look for me reaching out to show
As sure as rivers flow,

I'll never let you go
I'll never let you go
I'll never let you go

Absolutely, I agree that poets do the most lasting lyrics. :D

The all-time rock poet, of course, was Jim Morrison of The Doors, as evidenced in LA Woman:

I see your hair is burnin'
Hills are filled with fire
If they said I never loved you
You know they are a liar

Driving down your freeway
Midnight alleys roam
Cops in cars
Topless bars
I never met a woman so alone

Classic poetry, in which he is simultaneously singing of his love for Los Angeles and his girlfriend Pamela Courson.

I think the entire album "Songs Our Daddy Taught Us"by the Everly brothers is pretty poetic.Cheers! 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Well, IMO the best poetry in song lyric has been written by fish.  Sorry, that should be Fish (with a capital F) - of Marillion.
