Subject: Are we going to start placing bets now or wait?

Written By: ChuckyG on 04/25/03 at 08:06 a.m.

If you check the bottom of the front page of amiright once in awhile, you'll notice the various statistics I keep for amIright.

One of them, is the number of parodies on the website. I think the last time I made note of a meaningless milestone, was when it hit 1,000 parodies.  I think that was about two years ago. Well, it looks like number 10,000 is coming up soon. We're averaging close to 200 approved submissions per week now. A conservatie guess, says it'll take a little less than 2 months to get there.

The interesting thing about that, is that it places the date near the end of June, which is the month when I started adding the parodies to the website back in 2000. It was June 1st that I moved the old parodies over.

So what day do people think it will be, and who will be the lucky submitter to make number 10,000. Will it be STG or William Tong, or some new parody superstar?

Misheard lyrics are nearing the 50,000 milestone. It's taken 7 years to get to that point. How many more years before we get to 100,000? Since I started amIright, it's only taken three years to go from about 2,500 entries to 50,000. So I would guess less than three more (since the pace of submissions is ever increasing).

For misheard lyrics:

If 100 lyrics on average are posted every day, it would take another 500 working days to process the last 50,000. That equates to (next year) one year and 134 days. This period of 500 days equates to 100 working weeks. Therefore, it should only take until the 8th of September 2004. Phew. Hard mental arithmetic there, and I'm not promising that that's even right.

Taking into account 100 misheard lyrics posted on the amiright website each day to equalize workload.

And I'm gonna vote for STG as the parody superstar who submits the landmark parody.

The way I see it is that if I start hoarding my parodies, then in 500 days time I'll have another hundred or so...

...I wait until there's 99,950 on the site, and Whammo!  a 90% chance of the 100,000th song being mine!  World domination is assured MWUAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Phil

I'm keeping my eye out for spoilers...I wouldn't mind seeing a track list, but Bermuda said you would only figure out what song they were parodying on one or two...I do know for sure Party At The Leper Colony will be on there.

I have heard that there wouldn't even be any parodies on the new album... I guess I'm wrong, then?

There at least better be a polka  8)

And it's ironic how be both chose Weird Al albums for avatars on the same day...  :)

There is indeed parodies...I know I've heard somewhere there is AT LEAST 2, definitely more...

And there is some hint (Bermuda said it was somewhat of a stretch) on the album cover that hints to a song (perhaps the first single)...

Party At The Leper Colony has been confirmed - I've heard rumors about "Fell In Love With A Squirrel" (parody of White Stripes) as well...

Have you guys noticed how weird he looks now that he ditched the fro and shaved the moustache?  I like 80s Weird Al a lot better than modern Weird Al :)

I have my money on Phil, btw.

I know... the old Weird Al looked more "WEIRD AL" if you know what I mean.

At least his songs are still great.

we are still on the topic of bets - anyone want to bet on what songs Weird Al will parody?

Anything that's been overplayed, like "Complicated" or "Sk8er boi" or even that dreadful 1000 miles song.  Ugh.

God forbid Al does anything by Avril or Good Charlotte.

Now, Sum41 - I can handle them, but its unlikely.

I'm expecting that it will mainly be songs/subjects from late 2001-most of 2002...like The Osbournes, and that "dreaded 1000 miles song"... :P

Blurry-Puddle of mudd
you know youre right-Nirvana
Days of the week-STP
How you remind me-Nickelback
soething by Creed
Some Britney song
some Nsync song
you rock my world-Jacko

you also got to realize that certain artists would never let their songs be ruined like that ....Strokes, Hives, Raveonettes, STOOLs, BRMC, Donnas, you know..them...they would never let Weird al parody them...they seem to tight ass.....the White stripes might let him do one because they seem more fun lol

I agree with some of the songs already mentioned.  Hopefully something by Avril Lavigne, Christina Aguilera, or Creed, at least.

I guess you're right--I don't know which would be worse:  Hearing "One Last Breath" one more time, or hearing Weird Al sing a parody of "One Last Breath" like Scott Stapp.   :P

there's an awful song with the word butterfly in it.. be my little butterfly, sugar.. something like that.. I bet that would be an easy target for Weird Al..

I prefer to hear him skewer the more overplayed songs.. I don't want to hear him pick obscure stuff..

it's just too bad he doesn't release albums more often

Subject: Re: Are we going to start placing bets now or wait

chucky, you're thinking of ¨butterfly¨ by crazy town which is far from easy to parody. (i made one but i realized the pacing was awful and haven't been able to fix it) My bets for weird al's new parodies are:

In the End
Complicated
Fat Lip

What's ironic is that are are even more than 50 parodies posted up on the days when you have them, rather than less than 50, because to get the 350 per week you have to submit more than 50 parodies per day on the weekdays to make up for the weekends.

I don't run the stats every day, so I just ran it right now.. it's at 9719 parodies.. a little under 300 to go. The summer slump has begun, so I've seen a decline in the number of parodies submitted each day.. it was averaging close to 50 per day, but now it seems closer to 30 or 35.

either way, we should hit the mark next week at some point. I'm going to have to stop updating the stats, just to make sure people don't try and save up parodies to submit a bunch on the day it should turn over. (Though I guess you could try and count them every day from this point on to figure out which day it's likely to be). You'd have to try and submit the second I do an update, and have enough parodies to be validated in a row to get the magic number, still kind of a crap shoot. Especially if you write a bunch of crap, since I might just delete stuff.

I'm not giving out a prize or anything, so it's just bragging rights really.

Actually, now that I think of it, those stats are slightly off, since some deleted parodies may be included in that number.. hmm.. I'll have to try and adjust for that when it comes time to figure out the magic number 10,000.

Subject: Re: Are we going to start placing bets now or wait

Written By: ChuckyG on 06/11/03 at 09:11 a.m.

well it looks like submissions have dropped way off for the past couple days.. I'm averaging half of what we used to get for parodies every day. Still, the potential to hit 10,000 tomorrow is pretty good.. most likely though, it'll be Friday..

not quite.. the counter is over by at least 6 or 7.. since it counts deleted parodies (which are still in the database, but aren't written out to a seperate page).
