Subject: Something for parody authors to play with...

Written By: philbo_baggins on 04/29/03 at 11:58 a.m.

I've written a little app to allow us parody authors to have another way of playing with our info.  You can download it here - as things stand, it doesn't do a huge amount, as I'm not exactly sure what it should do...

Download it, install it, hit the buttons and see what you think...

Enjoy!

I installed it, but got an error when I tried to run it:

Cannot find CTL3D.dll

Ah, in your file, it's saved as CTL3D.DLH.  I renamed it to a DLL and it worked.  Time to play.

Interesting.

What is the Last Vote column supposed to represent (Looks like it says today's date for all songs...I know all of them didn't get votes today).

D'Oh!  I forgot to put that in the installer... Time to rebuild ;-)

It's the last time it picked up a vote: I'm not getting the raw voting data from Chucky, all it's doing is reading what you can see on your parody author page - when you install first time round, all songs will get their first voting record, but as it get updated, you can see the changes in number of votes.

PS Thanks for spotting that, Jeff

Hmm....I got some error with something like "The Win 16 subsystem has insufficent resources to continue running. Please close all applications, click OK, and restart your machine."

If it helps, I have XP.

There shouldn't be any specific problem on XP (though I must admit I don't run it on any of my machines)... did you try anything first, or is that on startup?  There's only two things I can think of to cause this: 1 is WININET.DLL, that it uses to grab web pages - you'd only see the error when you went to "Import Parodies"; if it's happening at startup, it means the NTVDM subsystem settings are all wrong...

...and Billy's right: XP never helps ;-)

Find yourself - either click the "Find" button (it'll remember you for next time that way), or scroll down the combo list till you see your name, then click "Import Parodies" button.  That should fill your list up with 75 entries...

The buttons at the top of the columns will sort by those columns, except for the "Groups" one, which filters by group.
The buttons at the end of each row:
first one (paper-clips) lets you assign groups to a parody (so that they turn up when filtering by group);
next one (web) goes to that parody's web page
last one (ballot-box) displays the voting history for that parody.

Since I'm only reading a current status, first time through it'll only have the one record in the voting history; each time a parody's votes change, it'll pick that up when you hit "Import Parodies" so that over the days/weeks you can see how your parodies are being voted on.

NB: Groups - no particularly useful functionality at the moment, but I put this in with a view to generating grouped HTML output for the parody author heading page - there's quite a few of us who've got too many parodies to look at easily, and if they can be scanned by subject matter, an interested party may well find that an easier way to check for parodies they're looking for.

It didn't take long for me at all.  Are you using a phone line, or something faster like a cable modem (I had a T1 line when I downloaded, so it went pretty fast)

Hmm... are you on dial-up (and connected?) - it's got about 40k to download, so shouldn't take that long (in fact, it should take the same length of time as it does to show your parody author's page, which is what it's downloading).  I haven't checked whether it'll force dial-up, though, or what the timeouts are if there's no net connection - that's why the dialog you hit "Go" on suggests you connect before hitting "Go"

FWIW, it seems to be working quickly for me, although my lack of submissions recently (and therefore lack of votes) is probably adding to that  ;D

In that case, what version of Windows/wininet.dll are you using?  (it'll be in your system directory, windows\system or winnt\system32)... the wininet stuff was taken off the SB website, and has only really been tested on my machine, so I'm not sure how robust it is.

Hey Phil!

Love your program and had no trouble with it in my Windows XP. But one question: When I downloaded our parodies, it showed the two latest ones (went up Thursday or Friday I believe) as having 0 votes... what happened there?  ???

Subject: Re: Something for parody authors to play with...

Written By: jreuben on 05/05/03 at 06:50 a.m.

If they went up Friday, I believe the program grabs the latest vote counts under the Parody Author's link, so it would still be 0 (until today's parodies are up), even though you have gotten votes (it's not real-time).

Thanks, Jeff - spot on :-)

It would be possible to write one that grabs a latest vote score by using the search-based parody author page... then compare it to the parody author link and highlight differences (i.e. those that have been voted on today) - I'll have to check with Chuck about the server load this could cause: if it's low (and you're on a fast line, bearing in mind that it's going to be 100k or thereabouts per refresh), you could almost have a vote notification option...

Philbo

Am having problems, and so is Merry...

When I clickon import parodies, and after clicking go, I get the message "Superbase - File Data in wrong format"

When I click OK there I get : "Superbase - Restart.sbp, can't find this file"

When I okay that, the whole application disappears.... ???

Any ideas ?  It happened to us at the same time ?

Peregrin  :)

Did Merry follow the link I IM'd and pick up the new version?

I guess not, if that error's still coming up... there's a zipped update here, but if you can't deal with a zip I guess I'll have to make an install out of it (which'll be bigger to download, of course).

New version fixed everything for me, had no problems with the unzipping.

Thanks Phil

It works

I gather the new info in the "Votes recorded on or after" identifies the average in each category for the new votes ?

However one song "Should I Stop Or Should I Go" list 11 new votes and says :

5.90/5.72/5.90

How can this be please ?  :o

Peregrin  :)

PS  Has anyone thanked you for this ?

Thanks  :D

Is there a way of setting your home page without having to choose it every time ?

Me being lazy with respect to the first x votes a parody has: if it never sees an entry with 0 votes, it will be working out a differential between that number of votes and the next voting record it happens to find.  Next time I have something worth writing or fixing, I'll put a fix in for that, but I can't be bothered at the moment... too much else to do, I'm afraid

If you find yourself (so to speak) by clicking the "Find Author" button next to the combo box, it'll remember you from then on.
