Dragonfly, that is one cool tune that you remember.  This song, entitled Be Thankful for What You've Got was done in the 1970's by none other than William DeVaughn.  Backing vocals were done by the group MSFB, known best for their instrumental "TSOP" (The Sound of Philadelphia, also played as the theme song for Soul Train).  ;D

"Thankful" was a smooth, soulful tune.  8)  While the recording consisted of essentially the same verses sung many times over, it hit a groove that seemed to go on endlessly.  :)

Here are the lyrics, whose message is as clear as the title:

Be Thankful For What You Got
William Devaughn

Though you may not drive a great big Cadillac
Gangster whitewalls, TV antlers in the back
You may not have a car at all
But remember brothers and sisters
You can still stand tall

Just be thankful for what you've got
Though you may not drive a great big Cadillac
Diamond in the back, sunroof top, diggin the scene
With the gasoline
Gangster whitewalls, TV antlers in the back

You may not have a car at all
But remember brothers and sisters
You can still stand tall
Just be thankful for what you've got

I have one question about this song that I never understood though.  :-/ What is a "diamond in the back?"  ???

At least one or two rap/r&b songs in the early 90's used the lyric that replaced "gasoline" with "gangsta lean".

Nas - "Black Girl Lost" with Jodeci is an example of one.  I think that was part of the chorus.

I'll try to go through some old cd's and find some other examples.
