The song is called "Tom's Diner" and was recorded in the mid-1980's by singer/waif Suzanne Vega.

In the version you hear the most, she starts the song a capella.  In other versions, she starts it out without any instrumental accompaniment.

It has also been frequently "sampled" (read: ripped off with compensation to the waif) by rappers and hip-hopsters.  Lyrics follow, the "doo doot doo doot" is part of a scat rap that Suzie did at the beginning of the recording...

(c) copyright Suzanne Vega

I am sitting
In the morning
At the diner
On the corner
I am waiting
At the counter
For the man
To pour the coffee
And he fills it
Only halfway
And before
I even argue
He is looking
Out the window
At somebody
Coming in
"It is always
Nice to see you"
Says the man
Behind the counter
To the woman
Who has come in
She is shaking
Her umbrella
And I look
The other way
As they are kissing
Their hellos
I'm pretending
Not to see them
Instead
I pour the milk
I open
Up the paper
There's a story
Of an actor
Who had died
While he was drinking
It was no one
I had heard of
And I'm turning
To the horoscope
And looking
For the funnies
When I'm feeling
Someone watching me
And so
I raise my head
There's a woman
On the outside
Looking inside
Does she see me?
No she does not
Really see me
Cause she sees
Her own reflection
And I'm trying
Not to notice
That she's hitching
Up her skirt
And while she's
Straightening her stockings
Her hair
Is getting wet
Oh, this rain
It will continue
Through the morning
As I'm listening
To the bells
Of the cathedral
I am thinking
Of your voice...
And of the midnight picnic
Once upon a time
Before the rain began...
I finish up my coffee
It's time to catch the train

No, *that* one was "Sucker DJ" and didn't involve singing the theme - it was a straight rip.

Actually, there was an "I Dream of Jeannie" spoof done of this song.  I remember when it the show used to be on Nick at Nite and they would play it during the commercials.  I downloaded the song about a year ago.

I had been trying to find out the name of and artist of Suzanne Vega's song FOREVER!!!!! Now that I finally found it I feel oh so much better. Once in a while the Doo Doot Doo Doots just will not leave my head and I really got desperate trying to find out the song. Anyways, I asked people on the messageboard and found the song in less than 5 minutes!!It seems like a lot of people were in the same predicament as me.

OK now that we've solved this one, there is a new song out lately sung by some guy.  It goes:

Doot doot
Beep beep
She put her hands in my fro

Anybody know who the artist is?   ???  Song sounds cool.
