Subject: OK, I'm going to do some work on amiright

Written By: ChuckyG on 05/30/03 at 01:44 p.m.

I'm going to try and add a simple voting script, just an overall vote for the comedy recordings. Just to give people some extra feedback. I'm also going to fix the comment summary page to include the links, and add a navigation link for the section.

While it doesn't get anywhere near the number of submissions as other sections, it is popular enough to warrant some more design/enhancements. If there's anything else you'd like to see, let me know, and I'll try and dedicate a few hours to working on it.

alright, im a little tired, so Ill try to make this understandable the best I can lol......we have that section that tells us what parodies were submitted in what month, year, day, etc.....how bout this: something that says for each individual parody author the order of the parodies submitted...let me try to explain...in order to find out, lets say, what Royce Miller's first parody was, Id have to go through every day on the "when submitted" section to try and find her first...now, i have no clue when she started, and so, I have no place to even start looking......lets say she submitted her first one in June 2001, and I figure out that thats where she started, but what if, she actully submitted one in December 2000, but didnt submitt another till June 2001?  How would I know?

So this is what I propose, something that says on the individal authors page the date that each parody was submitted..in fact, it can even go on the parody itself.....its so I dont have to go through every day in the other section to try and find when something was submitted...it also helps with the amiright awards to clarify if someone is a "Breakthrough artist"......

was that clear?

well, part of the problem, is that I store the data a parody was entered, in a seperate file, and that was started a few months after the site began accepting parodies. So some of the parodies may not have a date, and I used to sort the datafile, so even the order within the datafile, isn't going to help me.

the most obvious place for this, would be on the author pages.. but the tables on that page are already getting too wide.. I could just stick the date on the actual parody page, but that may not help you as much. Maybe I could make a second author page for each author, that one would be sorted by date, but without voting data, or maybe a page with just more data on it, like an enhanced view. I'll play with it a little bit and see what I can do..

I've got to leave in a little while, so I haven't quite finished it.. but I ended up not sorting by date, but just using the extended version of the same screen. append the following after a parody author name "_wide" before the .html to see your extended voting results, and when the software thinks your parody was added to the site. Due to the bug I fixed last month, some very old parodies, may show up as very recent parodies (by their date). I'll try and resolve that tomorrow. And of course add a proper html link to the extended views.

here's an example (big example):

http://www.amiright.com/parody/authors/williamtong_wide.shtml

the formatting leaves a little to be desired, but it's really only meant for parody authors. I also realized now why that program takes so long to run every morning, I was reading in the weekly/monthly/overall voting results and then not using it (since it makes the page really wide). So I stuck all that fun stuff in there too.. no totals yet for the end of the page, but I'll resolve that later too..

thanks billy for asking for some things that i wanted for a while but never got around to asking for and thanks chucky for working on them. And i promise i won't nag about this like i did about expanding the voting results but while we're widening the author pages i would like to see something with the peaks (just overall score dont want to make it too wide) of a song on the weekly, monthly, and overall charts. I dont know how hard this would be and if its hours of work then forget it but if it comes easily i would appreciate it

well, this wasn't really the reason I went into this file, was just something I had started but never displayed. I'll poke around and see what can be done with it.. I know it can be done, just don't know how much it entails.

Thanks, Billy, for making the suggestion and thanks, Chuck, for implementing.  The sample that you did of Will Tong is impressive.

well, I just spent another two hours on it.. cleaned up the formatting, added even more info, averages, etc. On the regular author pages, where it used to say "comments file" at the bottom of the page, now says "Enhanced Info" and links to the larger voting picture, with date added, a link with number of comments (if any were left for a parody), and at the bottom, some tallies (number of days you've had in various charts, number of parodies to hit #1, and highest position obtained in the various charts).

It's not a pretty page, but it should be readable.

This is probably the limit of what's reasonable to do for the voting charts. Something like # of days at #1 would require a lot more work, and just bog the script down even more. As it is, I didn't increase the processing time too greatly with these enhancements, which is important.

I don't like to spend a lot of time focused on the voting charts, because it's really only useful for the parody authors, and places too much importance on the voting info. Which is one of the reasons I try to bury it in the site (ie. not on the front page).

so unless someone sees something wrong, I don't want to do anymore work on this part of the site.

For days where charts were changed due to cheating, I know there's a problem with the data. So if you had a top ten hit on a day when I had to remove bad votes, it won't show up for the day. Unfortunately, recalculating all the voting charts takes several hours, and I never wrote something for fixing individual days (which isn't really a problem, I don't know which days I had to edit bad voting results). So there's going to be a few days in the charts that aren't quite right. This is also one of the reasons I only put this together for the benefit of the authors. There's also maybe only 2 or 3 days over the past year where this is a problem, so I didn't feel like fixing it. If at some point I need to run the script to recalculate all this data, you may shed a day, or gain a day, or something.

just to finish putting it to bed, I fixed one the remaining files corrupted during that bug I fixed back at the beginning of May, so the Bong Song won't appear as if it was added to the site in April 2003 anymore.

I also added one more summary line, for how many parodies by each author, made each chart. Interesting to see that William Tong and Merry&Pippin both average about a 50% rate for reaching the weekly charts with their parodies. Suprising to see how many other authors who crank out stuff, rarely make it..

Chucky! Great new look! (I looooove statistics). But there is one flaw. I noticed on our page that each of our parodies is consistantly shown as reaching one number higher than they actually reached (I have been keeping an excel file on each parody's votes since mid April). Those that went to number one are shown as highest position reached '0'. So the total at the bottom then is also incorrect - it shows we had 7 weekly #1s for pacing, when it is really counting the #2's - the #1' are listed as '0'.... and were not counted in the total...

Of course, some of us don't churn out ten parodies a day ;)  I'm sure if Jeff Reuben or Mike Armstrong started cranking them out they'd be dominating the charts.

And honestly, the guys who DO crank out dozens of parodies a day either lose out because they write them so fast they neglect to check for quality, or there are so many that the people who vote don't have the patience to look at every single one of the daily submissions by that author.

I noticed that too.  Very interesting, but probably easily fixed if you do a "+1" in your code somewhere ;D

I was testing this mostly with STG and William Tong's pages (since they hit all the categories), and don't remember seeing any zeros.. maybe they didn't hit many number 1's.. I'll fix it ASAP..

yeah, I had to add an extra line in there for a new set of variables for tracking the peak positions, and didn't notice the +1 I used when building the original hash. was actually easier to fix than I feared..

I'm also working on the regular voting results on the parodies, which should show up tonight.. I'm also going to start making modifications to parodies, and upload them all tonight or tomorrow morning.

I just checked the numbers, and you're going to probably wish you hadn't said anything, you appear to have had many more 2's than 1's.. >grin<

your spreadsheet will varry from the results still, because of the problems I mentioned above, with the corrupted voting results. I remember you had a parody receive some incorrect votes at one point.

Subject: Re: OK, I'm going to do some work on amiright

Written By: ChuckyG on 05/31/03 at 07:53 p.m.

ok.. next time you receive a vote on one of your parodies, a new section will appear under your voting results, which detail how many 1's, how many 2's, etc. each category has received. This should help for parodies without many votes, but that get nailed by the one's guy, so you can see how well it's doing. (ie. your average isn't two 5's and one 1. It's more like 3 3's or something).

Thanks Chuck!  This is perfect!

and I got one error, "Jack___(WIlliam Tong's Story)" to the tune of "All STar" by Smash mouth, was a charted hit and is currently on the top 100 overall, but this isnt mentioned on the page.  Thanks again...

it won't show up in the overall scores until it breaks the top 50, not 100.. the data files got way too big if I tried to keep daily track of that I'm afraid.

are you saying it also made a top ten listing (weekly of monthly) at some point?
