I should know this but I just can't remember.  Motown classic from the golden era.   Male singer first line, " IF I WERE A CARPENTER"

Also the name of the song, If I were a carpenter, Bobby Darin sang one version.  I don't know who sang it first though.

If I were a carpenter
and you were a lady,
Would you marry me anyway?
Would you have my baby?

If a tinker were my trade
would you still find me,
carrin' the pots I made,
followin' behind me.

Save my love through loneliness,
Save my love for sorrow,
I'm given you my onliness,
Come give your tomorrow.

If I worked my hands in wood,
Would you still love me?
Answer me babe, "Yes I would,
I'll put you above me."

If I were a miller
at a mill wheel grinding,
would you miss your color box,
and your soft shoe shining?

If I were a carpenter
and you were a lady,
Would you marry me anyway?
Would you have my baby?
Would you marry anyway?
Would you have my baby?

Robert Plant also did it but I think that was the early 90s.  It was on the Fate of Nations CD.

The late Tim Hardin wrote the song, Darin recorded it shortly after Tim did, with much more success.  Many ppl assume it was written FOR Darin.  It has been recorded by several ppl over the years, including Johnny Cash, Small Faces, The Tokens, Harry Belafonte, The 4 Tops, Luka Blooms and the aformentioned Robert Plant.  Tim Hardin was a great songwriter.  Personally, I like his version best.  Since you mentioned MOTOWN, I'm betting you heard The Four Tops version.  8)
