Subject: Female cover of Huey Lewis and the News

Written By: Snaggletoth on 07/01/03 at 10:14 a.m.

I have a song on tape and I don´t know who´s singing it. It´s a so called power ballad, probably called "Power of love" and it´s a female singer. Also, it goes "Cos I´m your lady... etc". Could it be Laura Branigan? I´ve searched through google etc and came up with her name. Also, is that a cover? Is Huey Lewis and the News the original artists? Or are their song with the same name another song altogether?

I guess I should know this/these but I spent the 80s listening to heavy metal so... :)

Celine Dion sang "The Power of Love" in the early 90s.  This is probably the version you're thinking of.  Another female singer sang this as well too, but I don't remember her name (Jennifer-something?).

They are two totally different songs BTW.

I agree with lebiew15.  ;D

The song sung by the lady is Power of Love, by Canadian Song Babe, Çéline Dion.

It is a completely different tune than Huey Lewis' song.

It could also be the version sung by Laura Branigan or Jennifer Rush, though Celine's is the more well-known version.

The singer has a very strong voice, so I´ll guess Celine could be the one. I also take it that she´s the original artist for this one and - unless I can get a 100% comfirmation - that it´s okay to credit her as such. Unless later covers are totally different it would be enought to make it "recognizable". :-)

For the record, there have actually been four hit versions of "The Power of Love" here in the U.S. (all the same song, which is the one you've described):

01) Air Supply first scored a minor hit w/ the song in the Summer of '85...
02) Jennifer Rush then followed in the Spring of '86, and hers was only a minor hit as well...
03) Laura Branigan earned a moderate hit w/ a cover in the Winter of '88...
04) Celine Dion then went all the way to #1 w/ it in the Winter of '94...

The song was co-written by Jennifer Rush, so technically, it is her song, even though Air Supply managed a hit w/ it first. If the woman you have on tape "has a very strong voice", I'd say it's a toss-up between Laura Branigan and Celine Dion, and pretty much eliminates Air Supply... :)

lebeiw15 and LyricBoy are correct, the tune you're referring to is completely different from the song of the same name by Huey Lewis & the News...

Funnily enough the Jennifer Rush version was a huge hit in the U.K and was at number one for weeks. The Celine version wasn't as big a hit over here and it tends to be the Jennifer Rush version that gets played more.Jennifer Rush has got a huge voice too so it may be her version I guess the only way to tell is to download them both !
