Heard it on radio today sounded like 60's musicians. Thought orignal was David Bowie certainly wasn't Bowie, does anyone know?

Found a bunch of sites that have it as being performed by The Merseys (UK band I think) in the 60s.
This link is to a Bowie site which credits the song as being performed originally by The Merseys.
