Subject: Pick of the mouth: Tom McRae...

Written By: theoracle on 6/22/2001 at 2:25 p.m.

For fun, I’m conducting a sort of survey to find out what people want to hear more of. With all of the new styles of music, many people seem to think that genuine music has been replaced with looped samples and a cookie-cutter method of songwriting. Do you agree? Tell me what, if anything, is missing in the music you hear now. Tell me if, in your restless search for something with substance, you have happened across a little-known gem ~ a diamond in the rough whose music sings from the heart, not from the corrupting lust for $$$. Each person can just give your “Pick of the Month”. Someone still relatively obscure, but whom you believe is too good to remain a secret. One example would be Tom McRae. He is a singer/songwriter from London whose music is sad, sweet and intense, but almost entirely unheard of in the U.S. He has been called “the new Nick Drake.” He has also been compared to Jeff Buckley and Radiohead. He is someone whose name I would use, even though his CD won’t be available until sometime in August because you can still listen to samples of his songs (www.tommcrae.co.uk ~ if you’re interested). That should give you a good idea of what I’m looking for. So now share some of your best-kept secrets; the floor is open…
