Subject: what are "correct lyrics"?

Written By: Tom on 8/17/2001 at 1:04 a.m.

As the singer in a cover band, it's my job to learn the lyrics of a song and rehearse them to perfection. The first step is to start with a "rough draft" of the lyrics, which I usually obtain from the printed lyrics on the album that the song is from. Next, I painstakingly listen to the song over and over and over, making corrections to the rough draft, so what I end up with is a word for word transcription of what is actually sung on the album. With this transcription in hand, I am now ready to rehearse the song I am learning. There are times that I do have to fill in the blanks because what is actually sung is unintelligible, yet in no way matches what is printed on the album. In my experience, it's quite rare to find printed lyrics that match what is sung in the recording studio, word for word. So to say that lyrics are "misheard" because what we really do hear the singer singing does not match what was printed on the album jacket is just plain wrong.
