Subject: What qualities make a GOOD band name?

Written By: ChuckyG on 8/21/2001 at 7:18 a.m.

So I was thinking of this the other day.. I've got these silly pages (and they are meant to be kinda silly folks) setup to state why various band names are stupid and for people to create their own cool band names. I don't however, have a nice set of guidelines for what makes a band name cool.

Some people seem to think the name should reflect the band's sound. This is true to some extent.. A soft rock groups shouldn't be called something like "Godsmack" and a heavy metal group probably shouldn't be called something like "Fuzzy bunny rabits".

I think a band name should also be somewhat vague. If you hear the band name, you shouldn't know right off the bat that it refers to something. "The Doors" for instance, refers to "The Doors of Perception" by Aldous Huxley. Kinda vague, but definately has some meaning.

I get flamed a bit on these funny band name pages, along the lines of "Who cares what the band is named, they kick ass". True.. but a band name is part of the parcel folks. Pop groups are more than just music, they're about an image. A stupid band name makes it that much more difficult to: A) Get your foot in the record industry door B) Intrest people in your music C) Let people discuss your music without laughing at your stupid band name.

So what's your opinion? What else makes a good band name?
