Subject: Hunted and Haunted for Years

Written By: Silversurfer on 06/02/04 at 3:38 pm

70's or 80's folk/country rock song.

Vaguely remember the voice sounding like Stephen Stills.

Thought I'd found it on the Manassas Album, but no luck.

I've asked people everywhere, even a Radio Host that specializes in the obscure who suggested Black Oak Arkansas. ( Nope!)

Refrain or descant goes something like: "Colorado.... Colorado.... Beautiful Place (in the sun) or (that you are).

My brother remembers it as well and I've seen an inquiry about it on a chat group back in 2001. Any ideas?

Thanks.

The song is Colorado by Danny Holien.

I used to have a 45 of it and have tried to find it on Kazaa but haven't yet.

the chorus is "Colorado, Colorado, beautiful place that you are"
feel the sorrow of tomorrow before you go very far.

People come from everywhere to see your hills
turn into a wonderland of play.
Visitors from foreign places seeking thrills,
I can see where it will end some day."

California come before ya
People are feeling the strain
Colorado will you follow
Letting it happen again.

thats all I remember as I haven't heard the song in years

Danny Holien is my second cousin, and I occasionally come across his album, which is judt called "Danny Holien", in record stores' 2nd-hand bins.  The song "Colorado" received some serious airplay in the Denver area in 1972-73, but most of the rest of the songs on the album have never been heard.  My favorites are "Wella Wella Isabella" and "Red Wing".  Danny (who originally hails from Minnesota, despite the "Colorado" image) has been a fixture on the Minneapolis music scene for the past couple decades, most of the time fronting his band "Cookies".  The album is not available on CD, but occasionally pops up on e-bay.  Napster used to have a file, with about 60 seconds worth of the song available, but I have never seen any complete mpg or other sound file available.  I also know that Danny had somewhat of a following in Norway (where "Holien" is a much more common name), probably because they did not realize that he was an American, but assumed he was singing English phonetically (like Blue Swede, Abba and the Scorpions)  Sorry I can't help you with actually getting a copy of the song, but I lost my copy of the album several years ago.

Hello Steve,

I was just talking to a friend of mine about Danny and what he is up to and where he has been all these years.

I used to live in the area (on Ogden Street, in Denver at the time and remember the band playing.

I have a mint album with the original lyrics and song notes.

Please e-mail and I will send a contact number.

I am currently recording the original album to C-D along with a PDF and JPEG of every page to the original album.

Have you been in contact with any of the other band members.

It would be nice if somebody would put together some info on the history of the band and what all the members are
doing.

Thanks,

Ted
Denver, CO.

National Lampoon Lemmings did a funny 'COLORADO' song I'll never forget..
'COLORADO'S CALLING ME'... when the singer gets to the ' Colorado's Calling' me verse, someone yell's HEY, YOU !

cute and still listenable today.

All the reposndents have been talking about the wrong song. The song is "Colorado's Claling Me'', by Christopher Guest (Of Spnal Tap, "Best in Show", and being married to Jamie Curtis.

The song is from National Lampoon's show, Lemmings", which ran in New York starting in 1973. Chevy Chase and John Belushi were in the cast with Guest. John Belushi is the guy who yells, "Hey, you." on the recording.

Colorado
by Christopher Guest, Sean Kelly, and Tony Hendra, 1973

I'm stuck in this old city now where living ain't no fun
Where steel and glass and concrete cancel out the wind and sun
And I'm thinking of last winter now
when we walked hand in hand
In the trails of the Colorado Rockies

The wind sang us a lullaby, the snow was thick as cream,
And icicles were chandeliers like crystal in a dream
And the streams were strips of diamond
And the hills were white as snow,
And a bear ate all our soybeans in the night

    Oh, Colorado's calling me
From her hillsides and her rivers and her mesas and her trees,
When blizzards snap the power lines
    And all the toilets freeze
In December in the Colorado Rockies

We had time and space and freedom,
We had love and peace to spare
Though we ran out of things to smoke and say and eat and wear
And the morning of the avalanche
    The Yeti kidnapped Blanche
And took her to his cave up in the Rockies.

    Oh, Colorado's calling me
From her glaciers and her canyons and her badlands and ravines,
    And infectious hepatitis
Was all that came to stay
In January in the Colorado Rockies

The baby didn't die until we'd burned up all our wood
Considering we ate her raw, she tasted pretty good
    Then the fascist health inspectors
Dug us out and mailed us home --
Except for Blanche who wouldn't leave her mate.

    Oh, Colorado's calling me
From her mountains and her rivers and her meadows and her trees
They tell me I'll be cured soon
    Thawed and ready to return
When it's April in the Colorado Rockies.
