Subject: more song bad grammar

Written By: saver on 02/12/05 at 5:09 pm

Awhile back, I started the topic of how bad grammar was used in older songs(not just the rap of today)..got little response but writers had fun adding to the small list...

WELLLLLLL......

Here's ANOTHER no one picked up on!

My first submission was 'YOU ARE EVERYTHING'-The Stylistics as they sing: 'She walk like you do'..
SHOULD BE: She WALKS LIKE you do.

NOW FOUND IN MANFRED MANN: DOO WAH DIDDY- " Whoa-oh, I knew we was falling in love
Yes I did, and so I told her all the things I'd been dreamin' of"

"I knew we WERE falling in love!!!!!!"

Oh the scourge of the past society!!! :-*

Happy Valentines day!

I never saw the old post, but I'm sure this example, my favorite, must have been mentioned:

"But if this ever changing world in which we live in makes you give in and cry..."

In which we live in? A little redundant there, Sir Paul?

Guess they needed to add some beats??

Almost like people who say 'revert back to..' revert MEANS back so they are saying Back back!!

You're actually ridiculing a song for having poor grammar? Have you looked at your post? I count at least five grammatical mistakes without even giving it a second look.

maybe 'have' instead of got??

However, I am not SINGING IT to America...as we hear it over and over on radio/records.
Thanks for catching what I missed.....

"But if this ever changing world in which we live in makes you give in and cry..."

I've heard it accused of having three in's:

"But in this ever-changing world in which we live in..."

Sorry to spoil the fun, but the actual line is grammatically correct:

"But if this ever-changing world in which we're livin'..."

Pishaw. Everybody has their own version of Paul McCartney's songs. Yours just happens to be correct. Way to spoil my joy at pointing fun at a Beatle... :P

find us a dream that doesn't ask any questions

and even that sounds funny.... ::)

Another classic case of double negatives:

"I can't get no satisfaction." (The Rolling Stones) What that really means is "I can get some satisfaction." ::)

Those songs sure pinch my eardrums when I hear them not speak properly! :D

TRANSLATION:" I CAN NOT GET ANY SATISFACTION"  DOUBLE NEGS. GONE...ALONG WITH THE BEAT!! LEAVE IT ALONE

I know that's what they mean, but lots of songs over the years have had lyrics with double negatives.

Good point. I never thought of it that way.

Does the phrase "poetic license" ring a bell? Sometimes bad grammar sounds better, or fits better with the everyday speech of the  target audience, which usually isn't the grammar police.

And that's why we have  people "AXING" where's the BAFFROOM. WHAT UP(oh you mean what's up?)    Poetic license doesn't work in everyday language...

"What's up" isn't exactly proper formal English either, and there was probably a time when that was frowned upon in everyday speech. Informal language evolves. When people say something to be diferent from their parents and then their parents start saying that, it's time to think of something else. At least that's how i see it.

One that grates on me is from The Doors' "Touch Me":

"I'm gonna love you 'til the stars fall from the sky
For you and I."

Krieger easily could have changed the end of the previous line to rhyme with the correct pronoun "me".
