Subject: Collaborative Challenge: Lyrics to Frankie Smith's Double Dutch Bus.

Written By: Foo Bar on 03/30/05 at 11:30 pm

I last made an attempt to decipher the rap portion of this song about 3 years ago.  Spent some google time, and the best *anybody* had come up with in 25 years was woefully incomplete.

Now it's your turn.  Starts about 3:00ish in the 5:30 mixes of the track.  Your mixage may vary. But you *ALL* know what I'm talking about.  If you've got the album, there's a track called "Slizang Thizang" that gives you the right idea.  There are real words in the rap to Double Dutch Bus, bzut izza lizzotta trizzouble fizziguring thizam izzout.

You can start deciphering it from "Plizay Dizouble Dizzutch == Play Double Dutch"

From "Double Dutch" (subtly different mix from "Double Dutch Bus", features female singer singing how "children will be children if you let them", and that "everybody's doin' it".  Lyrics are entirely about the rope game.)
(lead) ?Nizzo? ?pliz?za ?wtf? plizay-DIZouble-DIZzutch ?lizzay? my-GIZzirl!
(female) ?ahsawizza?

repeat 2x.
From "Double Dutch Bus" (the one everyone's heard, with the talk about the bus fare, trans-pass, and that's the way his money's past)
Hizzey Gizzirls!
????
????
????
Yizou Pilzary Mizou?
????
????
????
????

Wilzee ilzare plizayin dizouble dizutch!
      (Dizouble dizutch! Dizouble dizutch!)

Iz okizza?
Iz alrizight!
Iz okizza?
Iz alrizight nizzow, wizze, wilz??(AAAAAAAAUGH!  My brain melts around here.!)

)Then we're back to English for a bit, and then a list of names.)

Bip, Bop, Bam,
Allakazham,
But only if you're grovvin' with a double dutch man.
Put on your skates,
Don't forget your rope,
'Cause I know I'm gonna see you at my double dutch ?show?
Rebecca, Lolita, ?Fashawn? and Dawn,
Every time you do the Double Dutch you really turn it on!
Bilzarbra, Milzary, Bilzetty, ??ilzam,    (Barbara, Mary, Betty, who?! :)
Tilzommy, Tilzerrance, Bilzobby that's my man!  (Tommy, Terrance, Bobby)
C'mon - get on - the double dutch bus... (The double dutch bus!)

Holy crap, I think it's finally done.

Every year or so, I google around for it (why yes, this is how I spend my Friday nights, thank you very much!), and every year or so, gilzoogle seems to be gizzetting a lizzittle bizzit smizzarter.

The original thread appears to be toast, but the google cache provides a lot of clues, and arguably the solution:

Since we don't know how long the google cache will live, I've taken the liberty of reproducing the important parts of the thread here.

They started in 2003, and 30/10/2004 06:14:36 2004, Supernaut came up with the version often seen on lyrics sites.

Millze  cillzan  sillzome  ....plilzay dilzzouble dilzutch!
(.....play double dutch!)

...and while he got "Hilzzoo?" ("Who?"), which we didn't get, he didn't complete the puzzle, because he put "..." for the parts he didn't know.  Good step forward, but now that those things appear on the lyric sites, you've gotta dig to get past 'em.  I got lucky tonight and found the thread that spawned that lyric source, and can poke at it in all its glory.

User garvinn, 09/01/2006 20:17:25, breaks the logjam with:

"Milzee gilzot silzomebilzody plilzays dilzouble gilzood" (me got somebody that plays double good)
"Who?" "My girl" "Bring her in" and so on...

which got fixed a few months later by squid5363 on 01/08/2007 07:35:27

Now for the REAL coup de grace - austinwolfclaw, you are SO-O-O close. But I just bought the CD, researched the internet and came up with what I think is the first correct and complete translation/explanation:

But first I will say that there seem to be two legitimate ways of speaking like this - adding 'ilz' or adding 'izz' after the first consonant or diphthong. You can actually hear it both ways clearly on the CD. The girls/kids seems to add the 'L' while the guy doesn't always. Furthermore, on the next song on the CD, "Swing Thing," Frankie explains how to talk this way, and he uses 'izz' in the explanation. Hence "Swizzang Thizzang." I will use the 'L.'

OK, back to business...Here we go!

-Hillzey gilzirls, yilzall hilzave t' milzove illzout the wizay silzo the gilzuys can plilzay bilzasket bilzall
(Hey girls! You have t' move out the way so the guys can play basketball)

-I say whilzat? Nilzo yilzou ilzain't
(I Say what? No you ain't)

-Yilzall bilzetter milzove!
(Y'all better move!)

-I say wilzat? Wilze ilzain't milzoving
(I say what? We ain't moving)

Shilzu-gilzar! Wilzy nilzot, bilzaby?
(Sugar! Why not, baby?)

Wilze ilzare plilzayin' dilzouble dilzutch! Dilzouble dilzutch. Dilzouble dilzutch. (repeat)
(We are playin' double dutch, double dutch, double dutch (repeat))

-Milzee gilzot silzome-bilzody plilzays dilzouble dilzutch
(Me got somebody plays double dutch)

-Whilzo? (Who?)

-My gilzirl! (My girl)

-Brilzing her ilzin! (Bring her in!)

-Ilzo kilzay (OK)

-Ilzall rilzight (All right)

-Ilzo kilzay (OK)

-Ilzall rilzight! Nilzow wilze wilzill silzee!
(All right. Now we will see)

It doesn't happen often, but we at inthe00s.com got beaten fair and square.  Well-played, austinclaw and squid5363, and thanks for the last pieces of the puzzle.

To the best of my knowledge, that's the only accurate transcription of the rap in Frankie Smith's Double Dutch Bus that exists on the 'net.  It only took from 1981 to 2007, or 26 years, for the Internet hive mind to figure it all out.
