Subject: Do you know Lake Cadibarrawirracanna song or words?

Written By: Allison McKay on 07/16/05 at 3:58 am

This is definitely an obscure song that we were talking about over a glass or two of red one night and no-one can find the words to it.. So we have set a challenge to see who can find the words... if any of us can!
Lake Cadibarrawirracanna is (I think) an old Australian song about the longest place name in Australia. it is a great campfire song and a hot topic for us at the moment. Do you know the words or the song and where I can find the words?
If you can help with this debate it would be greatly appreciated! Plus then I win the bet... ;)
Cheers,
Allison

Cadibarrawirracanna, little lake with lovely name
and the stories woven round it
from the picaninnies came
Every night the native mothers
Croon this lovely lullaby
....  across the moonlit waters to the stars up in the sky

That's all I can remember of this song.  We used to sing  it at Girl Guides.  I'll sleep on it ... might remember some more of the song tomorrow  :)

Cheers
Janine

The name of the song is "Picaninnies Lullaby" and the Melbourne Kindergarton Colledge did a version of this back in the 70's, I used to have all the song books but cannot find them anywhere, I've been searching the net but haven't had much luck. June Epstein is also tied up with it somewhere.

I found the words to the song thanks to google. It was a Rolf Harris song that he recorded called Carra Barra Wirra Canna

There's a lake in South Australia, Little lake with lovely name
And the story wound around it From the picaninnies came
Every night the native mothers Croon this lovely lullaby
Croon across the moonlit waters, to the star up in the sky

CHORUS:
Carra Barra Wirra Canna, Little star upon the lake
Guide me through the hours of darkness, Keep me safely till I wake.

Piccaninnies' heads are nodding, Drowsy crooning fills the air
Little eyes at last are closing, And the boat of dreams is there
Guide my boat across the waters, Cross the waters still and deep
Light me with your little candle, Safely to the land of sleep.

CHORUS

Hey.
I'm doing Australian poetry as part of my Grade 9 English unit this term in school, and my friend and I are performing it for our assignment. Here are the lyrics for you:

There’s a lake in South Australia
Little lake with lovely name
And the stories woven ‘round it
From the pickaninnies came

Every night the native mothers
Croon this lovely lullaby
Croon across the moonlit waters
To the stars up in the sky

Cadibarrawirracanna
Little star upon the lake
Guide me through the hours of darkness
Keep me safely ‘till I wake

Pickaninny heads are nodding
Drowsy crooning fills the air
Little eyes at last are closing
And the boat of dreams is there

Guide my boat across the water
‘Cross the water, still and deep
Light me with your little candle
Safely to the land of sleep

In some versions the chorus (third paragraph) is repeated once or twice afterwards, but it's up to you.
Hope that helps :)
