Hey guys,
I have had this stuck in my head for 13 years, eversince I bought styx albumn and thier version of "the Grand Illusion" was not what I remembered from my childhood.
This song may have been popular on adult contemporary or jazz stations in the 1980s...
I could possibly have some lyrics wrong. Plus I can only remember two real lines:
Nothing but a Grand Illusion
Why oh why oh why oh why

It might be Eric Clapton he had a single called Grand Illusion. I don't know what year it was released but the lyrics seem to match.

BTW Janis Ian and Joan Osbourne also had Grand Illusion songs but I suppose if you went with the Styx album the artist you are looking for is male.
