Subject: Misheard? Sum41 / Sum 41 - Rock, It's What We're All About

Written By: Foo Bar on 12/08/05 at 10:41 pm

To my surprise, I found three or four different versions of...

Sum 41, (Rock), "It's What We're All About", 2002, Spider-Man Soundtrack,

...all of which had bugs, at least as far as my ears go.  Here's my best attempt, but I'm still skeptical about the lines:

"It's not about the money, cars, hotels or resorts,
it's about sweatin' all the b*tches in the biker shorts."

...because there just aren't enough syllables between "resorts" and "sweatin'", to fit an "it's" in there.  The NWA reference of "sweatin' all the b*ahem*tches in the biker shorts" is correct, but I'm not so sure about the first line.  Personally, I kinda (mis?)hear the first two syllables as "stand up" instead of (it'"'snot ab"(out the money, cars...).  Could that whole first line be a misheard lyric?

I'm also not entirely sure about the line "When I'm on top doin' the ball back booty", nor about the proper spelling of Mickey Ma?cooney.  Any guesses?

Finally - although it makes sense either way, how about "December 32", as in "day after New Year's", thinking that a New Year's party might be an occasion for which one might want to be dressed?  I'm not sure what "It's number 32, not the other situation" might mean.  Can anyone fill me in?  (If the singer wears a "32" on his shirt, forget this paragraph -- "It's number 32" is definitely correct.)

Rest of the song makes sense if you swap bits and pieces out and end up with something like this.  Consider it an improvement over any of the three sources -- but it's not complete yet!

------------ Sum 41 - Rock, It's What We're All About

Nevertheless, am I dressed for the occasion?
It's number 32, now here's the situation,
If the beat moves your feet then don't change the station.
Now pack your bags, cause you're leaving on a permanent vacation.
Well, I'm a disaster, a microphone master.
Put on the tape or ROCK your ghetto-blaster.
It's not about the money, cars, hotels or resorts, <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< ?
it's about sweatin' all the b*tches in the biker shorts.
Now, I'm Dave Brown sound, if you see me runnin late,
Cause I'm always makin time, I'm makin' girly feel great!
And I'm Bizzy D from way down town
I'm known to rock a mic like a king with a crown.
When I'm on top doing the ball back booty  <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<  ?
Hustlin deals like Mickey Ma-cooney. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< who?
When I wake up, I like a pound of bacon,
Start off the day with my arteries shakin'!

ROCK! IT'S WHAT WE'RE ALL ABOUT, IT'S WHAT WE LIVE FOR,  COME ON SHOUT IT OUT!
*Repeat four times*

Well I break down the house in every city we play,
Just by picking up the 'mic in the usual way.
We rock and talk with a bass that's funky.
We can even tear it up at a grade school party.
Well I can keep the beat, but I can't breakdance.
It's hard to look cool in crazy pants,
But I wear 'em anyway, even when they look whack,
It's my personal way to bring the '80s back!
Gave up the life of servin' burger and fries
High cholesterol gettin grease in my eyes,
I've been drinking underage, I belong on stage!
Hello rock and roll, you're my minimum wage!
Teachin' you a lesson in mic control,
Makin' rhymes with my letters in my cereal bowl!
Lucky number seven, every dice I roll,
Sum 41's on the prowl as the poon patrol!  <<<<<<<<<< Gotta be "on the prowl".

ROCK! IT'S WHAT WE'RE ALL ABOUT, IT'S WHAT WE LIVE FOR! COME ON SHOUT IT OUT!
*repeat four times*
*guitar solo*

Well let's avoid confusion by makin' one thing clear,
The rock we're bringin' is gonna instill fear,
And the power we control should be revered,
We sold our souls to Satan two times last year.
Take a look to the point, to the point im makin',
We rock the oven when we're stone cold bakin'',
And when we get outta hand and bust up the room,
JD is to blame for the Legion of Doom.
Cause I'm the B-B! I-I! double-Z, Y!
You ain't better then me, I ain't your average guy.
I like to watch girls shake it with a kung-fu grip, <<<<<<<<< or "shakin' with the kung-fu grip" maybe?
While the goon platoon is on the prankster tip!
We beat down London, we slayed LA,
Got an APB on the jams we played,
So when you're on the stage cold grabbin' your c*bleep*ock,
Pledge allegiance to Sum, the new KINGS - OF - ROCK!
IT'S WHAT WE'RE ALL ABOUT, IT'S WHAT WE LIVE FOR, COME ON SHOUT IT OUT!

ROCK - IT'S WHAT WE'RE ALL ABOUT, IT'S WHAT WE LIVE FOR, COME ON SHOUT IT OUT!
*repeat*
