Subject: December 1963 (Oh What a Night)

Written By: QueenAmenRa on 12/10/05 at 10:55 pm

This is one of my favorite oldies songs (sung by the Frankie Vallie and the Four Seasons).  The other day I was listening to it in the car with my friend and she was saying she remembers hearing somewhere that the song was actually trying to make some sort of "political statement" or something like it had another meaning, but she couldn't remember what it was.  I tried looking up something but had no luck.  If anyone knows about this song, please let me know.

Here are the lyrics:

Oh, what a night
Late December back in sixty-three
What a very special time for me
As I remember what a night.

Oh, what a night
You know I didn't even know her name
But I was never gonna be the same
What a lady, what a night.

Oh I, I got a funny feelin' when she walked in the room
Yeah my, as I recall it ended much too soon.

Oh, what a night
Hypnotizin', mesmerizing me
She was ev'rything I dreamed she'd be
Sweet surrender, what a night.

I felt a rush like a rollin' ball of thunder
Spinnin' my head around 'n' takin' my body under
Oh what a night.

Oh I, I got a funny feelin' when she walked in the room
Yeah my, as I recall it ended much too soon.

Oh what a night, why'd it take so long to see the light
Seemed so wrong, but now it seems so right
What a lady, what a night.

Oh, I felt a rush like a rollin' ball of thunder
Spinnin' my head around 'n' takin' my body under
Oh what a night (do do do do do, do do do do do)

Oh what a night (do do do do do, do do do do do)
Oh what a night (do do do do do, do do do do do)
Oh what a night (do do do do do, do do do do do).

If I were reading into it, I'd say maybe some kid drafted to go to Vietnam and b4 he goes he has his 1st experience, A coming of age thing. but maybe I'm reading into it way too much and it's just a young man's fond memory of losing his virginity with some chick he doesn't know, perhaps a hooker.  anybody else know?

My bf said maybe it was about Kennedy & Marilyn Monroe but that doesn't make sense- didn't she die b4 63?
Well some site I found said the song was originally something about the repeal of prohibition but then they changed the words.

Does anyone else know?

being a young guy "once" helps one to tune into the thought process behind those lyrics.
