Subject: lost in the 80's again

Written By: DOONE on 03/12/06 at 9:17 pm

:-\\MY SISTER STUMPED ME WITH SOME LYRICS, BUT OF COURSE, ONLY PARTIAL.  SOMETHING LIKE THE RIVER FLOWS, TO THE SEA--TO THE SEA.  THOUGHT IT WAS STEVE MILLER BAND, OR ASIA, OR MAYBE ALAN PARSONS.  ANY LUCK TO ANYONE WHO MAY KNOW THE SONG/ARTIST?  KINDA SLOW WITH MAYBE AN ORCHESTRA?  KINDA SAPPY, I AM SURE PROFOUND--HELP.  IT WAS FROM THE EARLY 80'S I THINK//MAYBE LATE 70'S.

Probably not any of these, but all of these came to mind when I read these...

*Unchained Melody - Righteous Brothers and many others
*Ballad of Easy Rider - Byrds
*Can't Help Falling In Love - Elvis Presley and others

The first two songs I thought of were ...

The River Must Flow by Gino Vannelli
Can't Help Falling in Love (80s version) by Corey Hart

Hi Doone,

From your description, I'm virtually positive this is the song:

Time, flowing like a river
Time, beckoning me
Who knows when we shall meet again
If ever
But time
Keeps flowing like a river
To the sea
Goodbye my love, Maybe for forever
Goodbye my love, The tide waits for me
Who knows when we shall meet again
If ever
But time
Keeps flowing like a river (on and on)
To the sea, to the sea
Till it's gone forever
Gone forever
Gone forevermore
Goodbye my friends, Maybe forever
Goodbye my friends, The stars wait for me
Who knows where we shall meet again
If ever
But time
Keeps flowing like a river (on and on)
To the sea, to the sea
Till it's gone forever
Gone forever
Gone forevermore

It's 'Time' by the Alan Parsons Project, one of many great songs from their album 'Turn of a friendly card' from around 1982. The song made the U.S Top 20 (I believe), but strangely did not chart in their home country (Britain).

::)
:BY JOE, I THINK YOU GOT IT//I CALLED MY SISTER, WHO UNFORTUNATELY IS A NURSE ON 2ND SHIRFT//TOLD HER TO CALL ME WHEN SHE GETS HOME AND I WILL LET YOU KNOW---AWESOME---ALAN PARSON--WHO'D THUNK---I GUESSED THAT ONE, BUT THE ALBUM I HAVE IS "EYE IN THE SKY".  I WILL LET YOU KNOW---THANX FOR YOUR HELP---DOONE.

Hi Doone,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I'm convinced it's the song, especially as that album does have a lot of orchestration (I like music on the 'syrupy' side). Further research shows that the album is actually from late 1980, that it made only #38 in the UK album charts, but #13 on US album charts. The single 'Time' got to #15 (US) in 1981.

A lot of great music from Britain did better in the States than in Britain (I wonder who has better taste ....), e.g. Al Stewart, his landmark single 'Year of the Cat' only got to #31 in UK, and the lovely follow up 'Time Passages' didn't even chart, yet in the US they got to #8 and #7 respectively. Still, there are examples where Britain appreciated a great single that did zilch in the US, like Barry Ryan's 'Eloise' (#2, 1968).

If you like 'Time', and syrupy heavily orchestrated pop albums, I particularly  recommend 'Turn of A friendly card', 'Time Passages' and 'Days of Future Passed' (Moody Blues). Also, 'Blue Jays' by Justin Hayward & John Lodge, + 'A new world record' by the 'Electric Light Orchestra' are all very melodic.Aah, so soothing. :)
