Subject: 70's Story Songs

Written By: Jorgem on 07/05/17 at 6:47 am

There was a story song in the 70's that was about some tragic accident and a police officer arrives at the home of the deceased and says something to the effect of "Is the home of Charlie Colgate 17?" Then the parents react and cry and say , "No. No. No," when they realize their son was killed in a car accident.

Does anyone know the name of this song?

You might be looking for "Things Get A Little Easier Once You Understand" by the group Think, released in 1971. They weren't a real band by the way. Just a bunch of studio musicians put together to record the song.

You sure it was Charlie Colgate and not Robin Cook?  (And that it was an accident and not an overdose?  It's possible there was a cover with less-controversial/more-radio-friendly-for-the-70s lyrics at the end...)

Do you have a son named Robin, Robin Cook? (Possibly misheard as Robert Cook?)

Yes

I'm sorry Mr Cook, you better come down to the station house
Your son is dead

Dead? How

He died of a overdose

Oh my god
