Subject: If you want to know about the UK pop stars...

Written By: Huw on 05/13/03 at 11:19 a.m.

...of the '80s, please, just ask!

I was a pop music journalist in the UK in the early '80s and I think I must have interviewed most of the big stars of the time (Duran, Adam Ant, Dep Mode, Toyah, Limahl, ABC, George Michael, Boy George  etc. etc.)

I've only recently discovered the '80s 'scene' on the Web which explains why I haven't dropped in here before. I've also started putting my old interviews and photos of the '80s pop stars online at my own site (www.darkneon.com).

Actually, I am also quite keen on the '70s 'glam' bands - particualrly T. Rex and Bowie (though also Slade and Alice). However, I never interviewed them so I haven't any inside info, I'm afraid....

Anyway, time to take a look around the rest of the forums. See you all later...!

How do, Huw? Welcome!

North Devon, eh? Haven't been there as often as I'd like, but a lovely part of the world, nonetheless...

Big star interviewer, too! Careful, tho' - there are a few rampant Duranies around these parts...brace yourself for many a question!

Could I just ask - were you a freelancer, or employed by the music media? Must've been one helluva job!

All the best!

Always was freelance (and still am! Only these days I mostly write for computer magazines such as PC Plus). In the early '80s I wrote for all kinds of music and teen magazines - ranging from Flexipop! (my favourite) to Jackie (well, I had bills to pay!), not forgetting No. 1, Kicks, Blue Jeans, Etcetera and a few others...

Yes, it was fun, I must admit. Though unfortunately it paid peanuts, which explains why I made the jump to the computer magazines. Besides, I don't think I would have enjoyed being a pop journo in the '90s half as much as in the '80s.

Cool! So you've met DeMode?! WOW! I wish I could meet Martin L. Gore! Besides David Sylvian and Bryan Ferry (and Morrissey!), that's one guy I'd love to interview if I was a writer.

Welcome a-board!

Thanks. Fortunately, I kept carbon copies of many of my interviews plus photographs I took and various copies of the magazines that I wrote for.

Unfortunately, I discover that I also threw away a whole load of stuff. There are many interviews I did - even whole magazines and books that I wrote - of which I no longer have copies (sob!). I used to do so many interviews in those days that it never even occurred to me that I or anybody else would ever be interested in reading them again, so when my cupboards filled up, whole bundles of stuff got thrown into the dustbin.

Fortunately, I have tracked down some quite interesting things that escaped those purges. I still have a couple of Adam Ant, Tears For Fears, OMD, Kim Wilde interviews (and so on) that I will eventually put onto my site. I've also got various unpublished photographs of The Beat, Lloyd Cole, Captain Sensible, Shiela E and various others. Until recently I wasn't able to put copies of these online as I only had a simple flatbed scanner. I've just bought a new scanner with a transparency attachment though so I'll be scanning many more picture from now on...

Hi Huw!

Nice to see a pop journalist on the boards! I'm from Britain as well (Plymouth) and love all the bands you mentioned.

I was brought up on 'Glam Rock' bands like Sweet, T-Rex, Wizzard and Slade (They formed in the town I was born - Wolverhampton). It's such a shame that both bands will only be remembered for one christmas record each!

Like Glam Rock, I love the eighties and have just got started in this excellent forum - I hope you are enjoying it as well! :)

Cheers

Bobby.
