Very fun! Ya know, before I saw that one site, I never heard of those giant people before. I've never seen any around Ohio. We did see a giant king kong on the way to Virginia Beach though.  :)

I wish we had more of those things around here. There is one in Lancaster, Pa...an amish guy....one in Schellsburg, Pa (a pied piper)...and we have this big football player in Gbg, Pa. It's at a tire shop...and they have it painted the Steeler's colors...and the number has changed everytime the QB has changed...it's been there for YEARS!!

Rhonda...what part of Ohio are you in...like what major city are you by?

South of Dayton, close to Cincy, in a very small town, which I love. I live outside town, just far enough out, where there are old country houses and barns and fields around us.  It takes me 7 minutes to get back to town and to my job.

that sounds really nice...close enough to go to the city...but far enough to be away from all of the hassle.

Yes, it's very nice. Ok, I found these pics today. I'm sure everyone around the states has seen one or two of these on their travels.

Yes..infact, there used to be this great roadside attraction (that I happen to have a neat collection of old postcards and other memoribilia of it) along the Lincoln Highway (Route 30). It was called, "The SS Grandview Point Hotel". It was a very happenin' place and even hosted some famous people of the time.

http://bbutko.tripod.com/LH/Ship/Ship3.jpg

Then the years went by and it changed ownership and the new owners made it into a place called, "Noah's Ark"...and basically it was a lookout.

The Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor wanted to preserve it, but a few years ago...someone set it on fire and it burned down.  I was SO upset over this. I never did get to go and take pictures of the ship and I was planning on doing so...but it burned down.

Here is a neat article about it:

hehe I loved looking at the stuff on that site - especially its Giant things.

Here in Aus we pride ourselves on "Big" things - many towns have a "Big" thing that signify whatever their town is famous for.  My dad lives between the Big Banana and the Big Elephant, and my friend lives opposite the Big Ram and my cousin lives near the Big Merino.

Me - I dont live near a big thing - by choice !!

Someone has tried to compile all of Aus's Big Things here http://www.bigthings.com.au/

I'm obsessed with big ol signs. I have many pics of this as its in the next town over from where I'm livin (in Bowling Green KY) but they're not saved on this computer so here's a link from the site about which this thread was started: http://flickr.com/photos/joeyharrison/62442651/

Here are a couple I took too. One in GA and one in FL.

When you first see the statue, it really freaks you out because you don't expect it because it is right there on the major thoroughfare.

I recently began dating a guy I met on Yahoo Personals.  He gets big points for loving roadside attractions and enthusiatically agreeing to go with me to the Wonder Tower:  http://www.roadsideamerica.com/attract/COGENwonder.html

I love roadside attractions too. I wore out one copy of Roadside America and bought another.

The Wonder Tower sounds like a must-see if we are ever that way. The weirdness is so quirky and so not what people today seem to be looking for. Plus everyone seems to fly on trips so they miss out on a lot of these gems.

My husband finally got to see The Thing a few years ago. I have made the trek more than once while in AZ to visit family. http://www.roadsideamerica.com/attract/AZCOCthing.html

I don't know that I'll ever have a reason to be in that area of the country again. I wish I had a The Thing tee shirt. I think I may need to try to get one via internet.

That's GREAT.  I need to get a copy of the Roadside Attractions....to be more purposeful about seeing as many as possible.  I think this is a worthy life goal  :D

I actually drove past this place once or twice, it's on I-10 about 50 miles east of El Paso, Texas.
I never was brave enough to stop in and try it.

How interesting! Have you been there at all?

I wonder if it is really because the owners are Polish that they have so many foreign language speaking visitors, or that the lack of roller coasters keep Americans away?

But you better hurry. I think the voting ends on Monday (just found out about it today myself).  I have to put in a plug for "Queen Connie" that isn't too far from here.

I always liked the Weird New Jersey site.  It's got a "roadside." It's also got a lot of "abandoned" weirdness on it.  If you poke around in the dark corners of NJ, you might get more than you bargained for!
:o

Or expand your "weird" search:

There are other New Jersey-specific sites, but I can't recall them off hand.

Hers a website I did to document this long lost Florida Gulf Coast rodaside attraction. The page isn't quite its
original grandeur as earthlink lost a massive amoutn of files. But it is still a good overview.

If anyone was ever there and has pics/movies/videos they'd like to share, I'd be very interested in seeing them!!!

There are so many pictures that I have seen of different roadside attractions...I would love to see them in person, and take my own pictures. A friend of mine just went to Arizona a few months ago..and he took some really neat pictures...he's moving there in August, so I will have to hit him up with some more pics/postcards/stuff.

Looking at this thread reminded me of something we saw on our trip in June. Way out on I-8 in the desert of Southern California, you pass by this place:

Official Center of the World, Felicity, California

I had been wanting to see this place, but by the time I realized what it was, we had passed the exit for it. And I seriously doubt I will ever have occasion to be going that way again. :P
