Subject: Youtube Retro TV Commercials

Written By: gemini on 03/12/07 at 5:00 pm

With the A-OK from Quirk, and since we love retro advertising and nostalgia, I thought it would be fun to post some youtube links to old commercials. I've been getting addicted to watching them for the past few days and I've found some funny ones, strange ones, and some that bring back memories.  I'll try to keep them short. . . . 30 seconds to a minute long, since I have a short attention span.  :D Post some of your own favorites if you like! Here's a couple to start off.

This first one I couldn't believe was real, but it is! The Flintstones for Winston Cigarettes!

This one is for a Witch Dr. Head Shrinker Kit. Everyone needs one of those!  :D

Terry is perhaps best known as Bernie Lomax, but to me, he's also Craven, the annoying news reporter on Night Court and the guy on Three's Company who wanted to kill Jack, but ended up eating Spicy Linguine  ;D

I totally remember that, they also had a Honda Scooter ad with Lou Reed.

I also remember really wanting one of those scooters when I was a kid, I especially thought the pop-up headlight was really neat. I've thought about trying to find one on eBay, but on the other hand if I rolled up to work on one of those things, the guys that ride their Harleys to work would never let me live it down.  ;D ;D ;D

I think it's funny that they're talking about individuality while they're all dressed the same.

Granada TV rentals...a staple on every high street in Britain!

(They also had a range of motorway service stations, rather bizarrely!)

The tune isn't 'That's Amore', but it sounds like it...

Wow!  I had no idea.  Do they still exist in the UK?

Did they use the same jingle in the UK adverts as in the clip I posted?

i met a girl in college who was in a pepper commercial. she was tall and gorgeous, really groovy chick too. you'd think anyone who'd been a pepper would be all stuck on herself but she was really laid back.

Close enough.  Did you recognise the TV installer man?

Wow!  I had no idea.  Do they still exist in the UK?

I'm not sure.  It isn't that common to rent a TV set any more.  In the 70s there used to be three places in my town where you could rent sets, now I don't think there are any (unless the washing machine rental place does TVs)

The 'rental' side of the business doesn't, but Granada (via a merger with another company) is the big player in commercial TV here...
