Subject: Unusual Pets

This story

made me wonder, do you know anyone with some unusual pets?  My cousin had a boa that he loved like a puppy...they were  together all the time!
I knew someone with an iguana (which later bit my face and left a scar).

Do you know any one or have  you heard stories about unusual pets?

WARNING- THIS SPIDER IS GROSS- high cringe factor if you are arachnaphobic

The oddest pet I've ever seen was a young binturong. I got to hold it. They love to climb, and this one tried perching on the top of my head. They also smell like Fritos, and their musk gets into your clothes and doesn't really go away.

They are totally cute when small, but when fully grown they can reach 50 pounds or so, and can't be kept indoors at all.

Here's a baby:

And here's an adult:

Perhaps the neatest "pet" I have ever encountered.

I don't know anyone that have had anything really unusual, I've known people with snakes and lizards as pets, but they're pretty common now.

There was a pet store near me that sell all sorts of unusual animals, they had a Sugar Glider, all kinds of spiders and even scorpions.  They were shut down because many of the animals they had for sale were illegal to have in the state of Virginia.

I like pets you can cuddle and play with, spiders and scorpions are not pets to me.

Nothing really unusual. My science teacher in high school had two wild tarantulas he captured on his property. He brought them to school and kept them in the classroom. They used to beat the crap out of each other. One day, they escaped, and the whole classroom was on edge. :o

My cousin had a rainbow boa named Pamela. ::)

My sister has always raised rats. A couple were vicious, but the rest were pretty tame and cuddly. My favorite rat of hers was Nibbles, a fancy black and white rat. She was the sweetest little thing. She'd come up to you and sniff around you to see if you had any sort of treat for her. She'd sit on your lap or climb up your shoulder and just watch everything around her.

Tarantulas can be quite loveable, really. I get your drift though. I always wanted ferrets. They're sorta like smart Slinkies that you have to feed.  ;D

What part of Va are you from?

I never had rats as pets. My sister had guinea pigs once. A long time ago I raised mice, but didn't consider them pets since I was breeding them as snake food.

(Warped, I know. Some kids had lemonade stands, I raised mice to be eaten alive by rattlesnakes, pythons, etc. The local pet store paid a quarter each for them...)

Probably the most unusual pet we kept was a hermit crab but I eventually let it go.

Currently, we have a turtle and a chicken.  (not very unusual)

but that spider was nuts.  AND what about the guy that had a tiger in his NYC apartment!  it got way too big for his home so they had to take it away....but....why?

When I was a teenager, my mom decided she wanted to have a minotor lizard as a pet...so she got one and my dad built a big cage for it in a shaded area at the side of our house...

It was pretty cool looking as it was covered with yellow spots... :D

You are thinking of a Monitor lizard, not Minotaur which is a huge half human half bull creature from Greek mythology. I have a Savanah monitor from the plains of Africa. I used to have a Monocle Cobra. It was actually my room mates, but he wasn't there much, so I ended up taking care of all the reptiles... most of which were venomous. The cobra was raised by hand from a hatchling, and was very gentle.

Years ago we found a monitor lizard living near our dogs house.  It would come out and eat the leftover dog food.  It was fairly large and they are quite pretty IMO.

I remember now we had a wild pig that my brother caught for a pet when I was quite young.  I used to bottle feed it.  When it became too large it was taken somewhere else.  I just found out about a month ago that they had slaughtered it for a nephews christening years ago.  I was never told of this.  >:(  I was so upset.

I never kill Daddy Longlegs. They eat other icky pests. I had one in my room that stayed there for about two years, just hanging out in the corner, growing fat off of mosquitos and other crap. He was huge when he died. I was sad.

We have a giant water beetle that shuttles between our stove and dishwasher. His name is Clyde. He usually comes out at night when no one is around, so if you walk into the kitchen in the dark, you're likely to run into him. He'll just scurry under the stove though.

I don't kill them either but I do escort them outside, usually on a magazine held very far from my body.  ;D

We are over run with Black Widows, and have a few Brown and Red ones too. Yippee. I wish we had more Wolf Spiders and daddy long Legs, at least they are useful.

I like having geckos around for that same reason....

The only thing is that once my cat spots a gecko on the wall, she'll leap into action to try and get it and kill it... :-\\

That is too funny!

My bird will chase our cat and our cat will chase the dog.  Something is wrong there.  :D

Not very unusual but when I was a kid, I had a couple of gerbils. My sister had a guinea pig, bird and a rabbit.

I always wanted to have a pet skunk. I heard they make very nice pets (once they are deodorized). Very clean & litterbox trained.

My mom once had a pet octopus (a baby) in one of our aquariums years ago...

She named him George, and me and my brothers would have to go down to the beach to catch live crabs for him as that was all he'd eat... :D

True story out of Australia- A woman was given a juvenile camel as a gift from her Husband and Daughter. It was only about 8 months old and already weight well over 300 pounds. It knocked the 60 something year old woman down, then laid on top of her in what experts say was a sexual gesture, killing her. All I can think is, I really bet they wish they had just gotten her another sweater.

Rats actually can make cool pets. I got two from my High School biology teacher, ended up with many. I'd sell them to pet stores and people with snakes. If the kid didn't have a snake, I'd tell them what great pets they are.

When I was in primary school, a friend of mine had some grass sakes and she brought them to school one day.

An adult class tutor I had in Newport has got two rather unusual pets; an iguana called Lemons and a parrot called Troy. She told the class some funny stories about them. My favourite one was when Troy dialled 999 while the tutor was in the bath. When she got out, the emergency services phoned her back and they told her that a child may have called them. The tutor said that Troy actually dialled the number and she told him off in the end.

I did once, but I was hungry.  My mouth was alive with juices like wine.  Burning the ground, I broke from the crowd.  I was on the hunt.  I was after him.

Then he ran away.

I don't know whether it's the same creature that I know as a 'Daddy Longlegs', but I've never seen 'em eat other pests...

They just sort of lazily 'mooch' about...a rather foolish thing to do when you have a voracious cat like mine!

Spiders can quite happily reside in my garden (and do!)...they're swiftly turfed outside if I find one in the house, as they won't catch many flies in here!

The American Daddy Long-Legs is a spider, the English Daddy Long-Legs is a Crane Fly

More or less, the big girl in the house is wolf/huskey
Every year a guy from state wildlife office comes and checks the fences and such like to make sure they're all acceptable. It's retarded, she acts as much like a Wolf as a Cat would.

It's not all that strange but I once looked after my friends Chinchilla's for a couple of weeks, they were fun.

No more than most other rodents, they do need to take dust baths though and that makes a big mess.

This substitute teacher I had in the fifth grade had a wolf/huskey mix. Beautiful dog. I'm not sure if she had to deal with state wildlife people though.

Chinchillas rule. They're quite expensive though.

Yeah, but they live like 20 years, good investment - time ratio.

Surprising isn't it, the gun laws here are so lax that a 12 year old could probably have an AK but they still come and check the fences so the hound doesn't escape... I don't usually mention that she's learned how to open the front door if it's not locked.  ;D
