Subject: The Thousand Islands

Written By: whistledog on 12/24/07 at 5:13 am

From which the salad dressing took it's name, the Thousand Islands are a chain of approximately 1,865 big and small islands that straddle the US-Canadian border (South Eastern Ontario / New York State).  Anyone ever been there, or one day plan on visiting them?

I've always wanted to take the 1,000 Islands cruise, but never got around to it.  I've been to a few of the islands, most notably Hill Island, and Wolfe Island, the latter which is the biggest of the islands

One of the most famous landmarks within the Islands is Boldt Castle on Heart Island.  How awesome is this ...

Thousand Island has always been my favorite salad dressing, ever since I was a kid. I never gave it much thought, but I'd always just assumed that the Thousand Islands were some remote island chain somewhere in the South Pacific.

It's funny though, I discovered the truth about 8-9 years ago completely by accident. I was a long-distance truck driver, and I took a load to Toronto. I'd driven up to Canada a few times before, and usually I'd enter at Detroit/Windsor and go back into the US through Buffalo, NY. On this instance, however, I had to go quite a ways further east and I ended up going back into the States right at the top of New York state, and as I crossed the bridge there was a sign that said "Thousand Island Region."

It truly was a pleasant surprise, it was one of the most scenic areas I'd encountered during my travels and I'd like to go back there someday.  :)

This summer I am thinking of taking the 1,000 Islands Cruise.  And there's really no reason or excuse why I can't.  The boat takes off from the city where I live ;D

It looks very beautiful, Jason. I've never been there, but I certainly would like to visit the area one day. :)

I'm sorry for bumping this but... That's amazing, i never even knew about those! The aerial photograph of the island with the castle on it is just fabulous, how cool would it be to live there? Damn!
