Subject: Additional Top Parody Lists for each artist/group?

Written By: K1chyd on 11/27/03 at 11:58 a.m.

This idea was born because of Ethanīs thread below about highlighting parodies of newer artists and current popular songs, and that the site is now "overrun" by "older" writers. I see his point even if I donīt agree with it, and I donīt think any group bigger than 5 pps could ever agree on where to draw the line for what would count as old/new anyway.

But because of trying to see his point, and taking into consideration Melhiīs "frequent" pointing out at that all writers tend to set unique goals for themselves, hereīs another idea.

How about separate top lists for artists/groups? If that can be arranged without to much trouble with coding for the site? Then pps here could set the goal of making it into the Top X parodies of a specific artist/group.

As it works now, if Iīm checking out ALL the (letīs say) Madonna parodies, by going through "search", I get them displayed in pretty much random order (it seems to have been alphabetical at some point) but I canīt see how they have been voted upon unless I open them separately. So Iīm thinking that maybe pacing, funny and overall could be displayed there too, and that they could be sorted by one of those categories, letīs say overall.

Then Ethan and others could set the goal for themself to "rule" the Missy Elliot list or whatever new artist they choose, etc.

I donīt know enought about coding to see if this is realistic or not, in terms of work for Chucky, but as a feature for the site, I think it would be great, not only as a layout/user thing, but also to help the Florios and others to find overlooked parodies when they are setting up the next award round etc.

And if itīs a terribly amount of work to do for all artists, then maybe it could be done one by one for the ones with most parodies. It could even be "official" week(ends) the way MTV has:

2003, week #1: Beatles week.
2003, week #2: Madonna week.
2003, week #3: Eminem week.
Etc.

I hope this made some sense in clearifying what I meant. Hopefully your musical and creative minds can fill in the blanks. :-)

END RANT TRANSMISSION

Gee whiz, I bring something up a few hundred times and...  :D

I just wanted to say that I particularly like this part of your idea:

since votes can be manipulated, I've never tried to use the voting results for anything. The top ten lists aren't on the front page of the site anymore for a good reason, they get manipulated by people who want to get their parodies on the front page of the site. The voting results should be used by the parody author for an idea of how well people liked their parody, and not some measuring stick as to how often they can "chart"

I take that as a "No!"  ;)

Note to self: Remember that youīre a blond, naive Scandinavian. Remember that youīre a blond, naive Scandinavian. Remember, remember, remember...

BTW: Nice new profile feature with the flag options. :D

yeah.  If voting wasn't subject to manipulation, the voting results would be everywhere by this point.

I found the flag options when poking around for a voting modification, and it worked with little coxing, so in it went.

Yeah and it's such a shame that's the case, because the numbers could be such a useful tool for the authors.  It'd be nice if, for example,  I parodied a song and nailed the cadence but pulled 4s on pacing, to then search on the original and scroll through them to compare mine to the others with similar and higher averages on pacing, to try to figure out what makes the difference between a 4 and 5 for pacing on that song with most voters.  But, the numbers aren't as useful if they're skewed.   ...OR, if I pulled straight 5s for pacing on something I knew I didn't quite nail, I could scroll through search results to compare to others with the same or slightly lower averages to try to figure out why my particular pacing stumble was forgiven, but another might not be, on that particular song.

Its truely amazing what people do to get their parody simple airplay...the amirightawards account was often flooded with votes on parodies that weren't even nominated...thats how mad this gets.  But hey, can you blame those people, all they want is credibility.
