Subject: OK, what gives?

Written By: philbo_baggins on 12/08/03 at 07:25 a.m.

On my usual "lets see what's happened over the weekend" trawl this morning, I noticed two things:

1. Somebody's submitted the little parody I wrote about Guy DiRito as part of this thread on my behalf... even to the extent of knowing that my philbo_baggins messageboard handle is "Phil Alexander".  Well, thanks, but you could at least have allowed comments so I could add this as a comment to the parody...

2. Last two days have seen nineteen votes added for "I Hate Britney Spears", which seems a little excessive for a parody that's been around for eighteen months - average for the new votes were 2.5/2.9/2.9, so they're not all from a 1/1/1-merchant, but it looks to me like someone's trying to knock the stats down with 1s, and someone else is trying to balance that with 4s or 5s... I guess I'll have to ask if Chucky wouldn't mind checking whether they all came from the same IP address.

if someone posted your parody without your approval, I can remove it.

I'll check the IP addresses, but I have a feeling some Britney fan found it, and reposted it to a fan board or something.  The comments they're leaving are probably showing up in the latest comments, generating more interest in it, etc.

Please do.  If I'd wanted it posted, I'd do it myself.  Thanks, Chucky.

I was wondering that, especially given the low-but-not-all-ones votes and the general inarticulate nature of the comments (must admit, I've googled and turned up a surprising number of references, but nothing obvious)... but for a song that's added fifty votes in ones and twos since I started tracking in April to get nineteen new ones overnight seemed a little more than I'd expect.

Done, at least they credited you. Maybe Lays Tostitos was so happy to have a parody written about him, he posted it for you?

well, I grabbed it real quick, and they're all unique (and definitely not from the same ISPs)... so someone must have passed your parody around to try and denounce your <sarcasm>Britney love-a-thon</sarcasm>.

Thanks - I'd probably not have spotted it without it coming up in my little app... I wonder if any of my other throwaways have turned up uncredited?  (no, I can't be bothered to look...)

Must have been by email, then (or not reached the google search engines if it's a newsgroup)

Still, it's propelled the song up to the 30s in the all-time charts, so I guess I should be pleased ;)

...this is getting kinda weird: I don't know if anyone's noticed, but "I Hate Britney Spears" (as released in March 2002, FFS) is now back in the weekly charts, and nearly in the Monthly (at #12...) - it's received more votes in the past month than any four of the songs I've submitted in that period.  Very odd.

maybe it has something to do about the recent article on the front page about anti-britney sites and what will come up if you do a google search for "i hate britney spears"

Ah... methinks you may have something there, young Ethan.

Now all I have to do is hope that there's worldwide front page articles about broken computers, and "Mend My PC" will be up there, too :-)

Though at least my prophecy was wrong: now that S-Club 7 have split up, we don't have seven different Ex-Club 7 members doing solo numbers :-)
