Subject: Has someone else had your idea?

Written By: 2nz on 01/06/04 at 01:38 a.m.

Have you ever had a really good idea and then ended up wishing someone else hadn't had it before you? I guess you'll have to trust me when I say I thought of the parody idea myself and then it turned out that not only was the idea 'had' at least four times before I had it, but one of my key lines was identical to a song that already existed in the parodies section on amiright. Needless to say, I'm not submitting mine, but here's an hour that I'll never get back: So...I was browsing songs for my next parody idea, and I start the "Banana Boat Song". And I'm amazed at how easily 'Osama', 'Saddam-a', and 'Al Qaeda' fit into the place of 'Banana'. So I write and research for about an hour, trying to see what role the Taleban really had and what's actually been going on recently. Aside from the well-televised reasons to hate them, turns out most Muslims hate Bin Laden and the Taleban because they follow Wahhabism, an extremist distortion of Islam. And the Taleban story goes back to around 1996 and earlier, but research it for yourself if you want. Only after I wrote some more and learned these odd facts did I do a search for 'banana' on the parodies and find the authors that beat me to the punch. I've been rambling for a while, so my apologies for this entirely unnecessary story and fact session.

I've been beaten to an idea a couple of times, but you should always search the parody archives before you start writing anything - particularly if the original song is well-known and likely to have been parodied several times at least.

Malcolm Higgins beat me to a few ideas (Do You Really Want To Burp Me, for example), where I missed his version before writing mine...either I misspelled Culture Club when I searched for it, or just didn't see it.  I left a comment basically saying that Malcolm's version was out there, I came up with my idea on my own, and that they are obviously two songs that were created separately.  Same thing happened with Bionic to the tune of Ironic.

Leb beat me to "Get The Dinner Started" for Get The Party Started by Pink.

Weird Al released "Eat It" and "Spam" days after I had written my own (inferior) versions of both songs.  :-/

My most famous parody, Y.O.D.A.
At the same time a Yank came up with something like it too, and we both weren't impressed when we found out about each other, and were initially convinced the other had ripped us off. We sorted it out though.

Steven: I followed your link - interesting story. But, damn, that Luke Ski guy takes himself way too seriously.

This stuff happens all the time. Here's a list of some of my works-in-progress that I abandoned when I found out they'd been done before:

"Al Qaeda" to "Elvira"
"Boobs! I Did 'Em Again" to "Oops! I Did It Again"
"Constipated" to "Complicated"
"Chipmunks Roasting on an Open Fire"
"The Buttcracker" to "The Nutcracker"
"Yellow Snow" to "Let It Snow"
"Losing My Erection" to "Losing My Religion"
"Everything's Coming Up Moses"
"Cher" to "Hair" (Johnny D beat me to this one)
"Santa's Watching Me" to "Somebody's Watching Me" (Billy Florio beat me to this one)

I'm sure there are others. And, 2nz, Back in late 2001 I, too, was going to do a "Day-O" (Banana Boat Song) parody about Al Qaeda. It was the "Taliban" for "Tally man" sub that I found irresistible. But then I was forwarded a recorded version of the same idea, so I scrapped mine and did "Merry Poppystan" (to "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious") instead - but I did throw in a "Missa Tallyban" line.

One last anecdote: In March '03, before my amiright days, I wrote a parody of "Leader of the Pack" called "Leader of Iraq," which Robert Lund recorded. Since then, I have learned of several other versions of the same idea - one recorded version that was played on NPR, another that circulated the net with a DIY "video" clip, and another set of lyrics by none other than Malcolm Higgins. I haven't submitted my version to amiright, but the lyrics and MP3 are on my site.

Anyhoo, I've now learned to search the web before I plunge too deeply into a parody idea. The end.

Whoa Spaff! Thats a lot! :o

I did "Walkin Round iN Women's Underwear" , but it was already a Bob Rivers song,. my version is on amIright though  ;D

I was gonna change "Addicted to Love" to "Addicted to Grub" , but Malcolm had already done it

I don't write a line these days before checking amiright and googling to see if anyone's done it already. Even Wierd Al has this problem.

i always check amiright first but i haven't been googling... maybe i should - back in may i wrote a song with the same title as a great luke ski song... i don't think he knows about it and i'm not planning on doing anything to possibly give that song increased exposure. I also did "what's my name again" to what's my age again before i found amiright, and i found out joe kaiser had had a big amiright hit with  a song of the same title a while back soon after submitting my version.

All the TIME!

Spaff took the "Nailing charlie's angels" idea before I had a chance to write it, Rick Duncan had "Ban on the gun," before me, Syncronos with, "me and Julio dont have a green card," Lebeiw with, "Every little thing she does is tragic," ah...there are more...

Yeah, "Taleban" for "Tally man" was part of my line that matched someone elses exactly. I've learned to do hard songs whenever possible because odds are almost no one will gimmick the same idea. Then, if I ever do a simple song, I can go crazy with my '''well-honed verbal matching skills''' and not rely too much on one-line gimmicks.

I've never thought it a huge problem to do the same idea as someone else. Not everyone is talented, and quite frankly, if I think I can do a better job than someone else, I go ahead and do it.

So even if someone has already posted something with the same title, I wouldn't hesitate to write my own (unless I thought I couldn't do better).

This is all moot of course, since I don't write parodies, just review them every morning.  Of course, parodies dealing with Britney Spears breasts are totally overdone, so don't even bother with those >grin<

that's a pretty interesting story actually, but I agree that the guy is a bit full of himself from reading that story.  I'm sure that your parody couldn't have been that close to his that anyone would have confused the two of them (especially if yours dealt with Empire and his dealt with Jedi).

He almost sounds as though he thinks the idea that YMCA could be YODA is so unusual that he's the only person who could ever make that connection.  I think it's a good example of why people need to keep an eye on their peers, it keeps them a little more humble.

So many times I can't remember.

Part of Merry's and my problem is that we will go back and forward with our lyrics till we are happy with them.

If either of us are not available at any given time, the holdup has been known to cause our idea to be overtaken by an earlier submission !  Grrr !

This usually results in one of us throwing a tanty !  :o  Usually me !  ;D  :( ::)  :P
