Five California Amiright parody writers got together in one place and the universe exploded! We all (except for my husband Rick and me) had never met before making musical connections on the site. And we have pictures to prove it! One is attached. Would it be possible to post it on the site somewhere? We'd all like to do it but are not sure if it's possible. What do you think?
Four of us live in the San Francisco Bay Area and one had come up from L.A. to visit a friend in the area. The location was an open mic at The Espresso Garden in San Jose (a favorite hangout of Rick's and mine). From left to right, we are: Bob Gomez, Leah Lockhart, Rick Duncan, Mari Aranoff Duncan, and Paul Robinson.
It was great fun! Bob, Rick and I took turns performing while Paul and Leah sat in the audience, looking greatly amused, and the rest of the peformers audience laughed and scratched their heads. It was Bob's first time peforming live in a while and he was a hit. Leah's boyfriend, Chris (who doesn't at this time write parodies), took the photo.

the last time a "convention" was proposed, I suggested it might not be a bad idea to just start off with a bunch of mini meetings, you know, one in the northeast, one on the west coast, one in the south, one if the midwest, etc. Anywhere there's a gathering of a handful of people. I could then post a "meeting" notice on the front page of amiright and see if we could maybe pull a few lurkers out for them too... doesn't need to be anything fancy.
and no, I don't sing... I tried a few weeks ago in church, and was amazed at how much I forgot from my choir days in middle school. yikes!

Whoah. Nice... I've been there several times :D. Even got to perform there once with my dad. Only time people've actually paid specifically to come see us, it was fun! If you do this again, and it happens to be in the summer when I'm not away at college, I will so be coming. Sure I could get my dad along, too - not a parodist himself, but a great musician and the worst (or best, depending on your perspective) punster I've ever met.

Thanks for sharing the photo and for sparking more interest in amiright get togethers. I haven't yet seen any posts from Southern California (other than Paul Robinson), so I might have to go 350 miles to San Jose if I want to catch some amiright spirit. Which would be a good thing because I have been enjoying the music on the RAD/MAD web site, particularly "They Flew Beyond the Sky," "Amiright Tribute," and "Hole in the Ozone."

Wow. Ok, this is fricking weird. My dad just called to see what was up, and him mentioning his gig tonight at a local place reminded me that I wanted to tell him about amiright, and how a bunch of people are from the bay area and met at the Espresso Garden. Anyway, I mentioned the peoples' names here, and apparently Mari and Duncan already know him :o! It's a freaking small world. Apparently they are in the Northern California Songwriters Association with him. He told me their songs are really funny (which can be assumed from the quality of their parodies, which I'm now going to look at in more detail) so now I'm even more hoping that another such meeting happens this summer, as I'll be my dad's son, instead of just some random college kid. Anyway, his name's Dave Field, and now I'm annoyed I didn't mention his name earlier ;-).

Neminem, I remember your dad very well. Say hi for me! I recall that he brought his son to an event; must have been you! I also remember that he wrote good songs. We all used to belong to a songwriters' group which sometimes met at Espresso Garden. Hope we can all get together this summer. Paul R. may be returning to visit his friend up here, and Bob and Leah live close enough.

Yeah, I forget the name of the songwriters association that was, but it was fun while it lasted. Well, I suppose it might still exist, just not the one in Santa Cruz, which made it not worth it for my dad to be part of it. But yeah... I sung some backup vocals there one time.
I still really can't believe that, at a random site I stumbled upon several years ago while looking for a parody that didn't turn out to be here, one (well, two, technically) of the regulars happen to know my dad, who is by no means famous. Though I wish he were, of course. And yes, he definitely does write good songs; that's why I'm always spamming his web site for him ;-).
