Subject: Well-known songs whose lyrics are interchangeable

Written By: Johnny_D on 03/14/04 at 02:59 p.m.

This topic is related to the parody-creation-process, so I thought I'd start this thread just for fun!

Try singing the lyrics of "Amazing Grace" to the tune of "The Ballad of Gilligan's Island" ... it works!   And it works the other way around, too.

I suspect that a lot of popular songs have melodies and rhythms that are almost universal in some sense... and a lot of well-known songs' lyrics and melodies are probably interchangeable in the same way that those of "Amazing Grace" and "Gilligan's Island" are.

Please post any other examples you discover!

AND IT IS OKAY to post examples that are from other writers like Weird Al or anybody else - this Messageboard thread isn't bound by the same rules as Amiright's parody postings - you are encouraged to share funny lyric-interchanges no matter where they come from.

Johnny D  :) ;D

It also works to the Eagles song I'm Already Standing on the Ground.  This was adapted at the church I go to and it is a really great song to sing.  It starts out with the Amazing Grace lyrics then kind of parodies into something that says: I'm already standin' on solid ground.

I don't have a copy of the lyrics. It blew my mind the first time I heard it.

Weird Al did this once; he sang the Beverly Hillbillies lyrics to the tune of "Money For Nothing." But he had to insert some small words, like "Now let me tell you, one day he was shootin'...". That was creative.  ;)

I love that one!

"The little Clampett got his own cement pond, the little Clampett he's a millionare! Now everyone said Califrony, is the place that you wanna be, we got to load up, this here truck now, we got to move to Beverly!" LOL!

He also once did the Brady Bunch theme to the tune of "The Safety Dance" its pretty funny!

Agri, "Green Acres" and "Purple Haze"? LOL!! I love it!

I did an MFN thing to with the "Gilligan's Island" theme

I had a few other ideas in mind for the future

"The Beverly Hillbillies " theme to "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
"Happy Days Theme" to "Rock of Ages" ( Wouldnt that be HILARIOUS? I think so )
Ill think of more later

Johnny D - 'SCUSE ME WHILE I SNIFF SOME HAY"?  This sounds like a fun topic,  nothing comes to mind at the moment but I'll give it some thought.

Don't know if it's my InterNet access provider, my PC or the site but the last couple days have been a struggle on the site.  Couldn't get on many times and when I did it's been  awfully slow.  I'm waiting MINUTES between screens after I submit something.  Got some errands and stuff to run so I'll try again later today.

OH, wait, I came over here to check on the Bracket #2 voting and what my obligations are for round #3 as far as the deadline.  Better find that out before signing out....

JACK W - Those are really funny lyrics.

Thanks for posting that, Jack!

Remember, everybody - it's OK to post funny lyrics/song interchanges from other writers (such as, for example, Weird Al, and anyone else) on this thread...they don't have to be your own discovery - they can be from anywhere, from anyone!

Ok this isnt the whole Weird Al song "Brady Bunch" to "The Safety Dance" , this is just the last part

It's the story of a lovely lady
Who was bringing up three very lovely girls
All of them had hair of gold, like their mother
The youngest one in curls

It's a story of a man named Brady
Who was busy with three boys of his own
They were four men living all together
Yeah, but they were all alone

Until the one day, one day when the lady met the fellow
And they knew, and they knew it was much more than a hunch
Then they knew this group must somehow form a family
That's the way, that's the way, that's the way they all became

The Brady Bunch
Well, The Brady Bunch
Yeah, The Brady Bunch
Well, The Brady Bunch
Oh, it's The Brady Bunch
It's The Brady Bunch
Oh, The Brady Bunch, yeah
Oh, The Brady Bunch
It's The Brady Bunch
Well, it's The Brady Bunch
Well, it's The Brady Bunch
Well, it's The Brady Bunch
It's The Brady Bunch

Martha, Hmmm...I don't have the album with "The Weight" by the Band on CD...I have it somewhere on Cassette in fine shape I'm sure.  I'll see if I can scrounge it up later tonight and check it out.  Looks like you really put a lot into this one.

AC/DC's Hell's Bells (words) to Hendrix's Purple Haze (music)

"Rolling thunder, pouring rain
Coming on like a hurricane
lighting flashing across the sky
Only young butcha gonan die!"

There is a quiz show (I think its 'I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue', Philbo will know for sure) on BBC Radio 4 where one of the rounds is "singing one song to the tune of another".  It often had me in stitches.  Some songs worked really well and others had to have convoluted pronunciations to get the words to fit the rhythm.

Looks like "Purple Haze" might fit a LOT of other songs' lyrics!

How about singing the lyrics of "Mary had a little lamb" to the tune of the Gilligans Island theme?

"Now, mary had a little lamb, its fleece was whit as snow.
And everywhere that mary went, the lamb was sure to go.
It followed her to school one day, that was against the rule;
It made the children laugh and play, to see a lamb at school.
To see a lamb at school...."

LOL !  ;D ;D ;D

This is getting a little freaky... How many songs can fit "The Ballad Of Gilligan's Island" ?

Have we discovered a rift in the space-time-parody continuum here, swirling around the sub-space nexus of a campy 1960's American TV sit-com?

I have a couple of dozen ISIHAC episodes as MP3s (they're 6-7MB a throw), it includes things like "Blame it on the Boogie" to the tune of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic", "Kung Fu Fighting" to the tune of "Greensleeves" etc. (though those are two of the very best)

If you've the bandwidth to spare, search for ISIHAC in KazaaLite or whatever fileshare you prefer - there's usually a few around.

There's three available for download here: http://www.bluehaze.com.au/mmedia/radio_shows.html (though I don't know which as yet, because they're coming through extremely slowly)

I have a question to ask my parody associates.

Is it Pink Floyd's- "Dark Side Of The Moon" the album that
goes seamlessly with a muted "Wizard of Oz" movie

Is this an urban legend?
Has anyone ever tried it?
And if so, were you sober at the time? *giggle* :D
