Subject: Song Of The Month Contest

Written By: Claude_Prez on 03/20/04 at 09:23 p.m.

Here's the idea:  The first seven days of the month is entry week.  Everyone enters one song of theirs from the previous month.  At midnight on the eighth day, entries close and voting begins, continuing until the end of the month.  Vote by reading all entries then choosing your favorite three in order--favorite gets 3 points, next gets 2 pts, 3rd gets 1 pt.  Voting closes at midnight the last day of the month and whoever has the most points wins.  Voting is restricted to contest participants but if we continue to do it each month you can vote as long as you've been a participant before (you just have to read all the songs).  I have more details thought out but for now I'd just like to throw this out there and see if anyone's interested.  The cool part about this is if it's set up right no one will have to run it; it's pretty simple.  All right, gotta go now.  See you all later.

Claude,  that's an excellent idea...I guess the experience of having run this last one brought the concept of a "low maintenance" contest to the top of you possibilities. Hey, aren't you glad you didn't fall for that hare-brained idea I wanted to go with,? Each contestant using a different parody for each round.  The mental wards from Coast-to-Coast and a few in Europe would probably be filled with "amiright" contestant's.   I know I would have been front & center in that, it was PLENTY ENOUGH work to handle the voting obligations the way it was done.

I'm interested.  I have a suggestion.  Can the first month use any song from any month that a writer wanted to submit?  Since it is the first run of the contest you may get better participation if writers could put any song in that they have written.  After that then you could restrict it to only songs from the previous month.  Some writers that want to enter may not do so if they don't have anything worthwhile from this current month.  This way, you get people interested and they may want to write something special for the next month's contest.

Good idea.  I'm interested.  I think it would be good to start in April for parodies submitted in March.

Good! I just happen to have a good one from last month (it sucks, only rarely being able to flesh out my ideas into full parodies). So I'm in/interested.

I meant to modify my earlier one but hit the wrong button...Anyway,  I didn't say "count me in" back then.  So now I say "Count me in "  Thanks... (03/21/04, 2:30 pm)

Actually, I still think that was a great idea and I'd enter one like that in a heartbeat, or maybe would run it one day far in the future.  Maybe a smaller one, though, with only proven reliable voters accepted or something.  Anyway, I learned a lot from this one and how to run one more smoothly in the future.

I know what you mean; so far I haven't written any this month so I won't be entering unless I get on my butt and write one.  I was thinking maybe as a compromise we could allow any songs from the first three months of this year so far.  It probably would make for a more successful first contest and increase the likelihood that we'd do it again next month.  On the other hand, if the idea is to find the best song of March, maybe we should just do March songs.  Any other thoughts?

PS:  It just occurred to me that just for the record, I don't think anyone should let the "worthiness" of their entry keep them from entering, since the real purpose of this whole thing is to function as a sort of co-op where we exchange attention for our stuff and the contest part is more of a fun bonus.

Yeah, I'll do it. And I like Guy's idea.

With the impending demise of the "Voting Top Ten Lists", things like a Song Of The Month Contest, and future Tournament Brackets, could fill the void, so-to-speak, left by the end of the top ten lists....they would give people a chance to vote and express preferences and opinions in an open forum once again.

And then there's my idea of the "Invitational Poll" ... see ChuckyG's "No More Voting Top Ten Lists" thread for more on that idea...
