Subject: Contest voting netiquette

Written By: Meriadoc on 04/02/04 at 07:47 p.m.

Just wanted to say that I think one of the nicest things about the contests that Ethan and Claude are currently running is that it gives some authors a chance to gain votes and comments, especially on some of their lesser known submissions. I urge everyone who reads the parody contest submissions to take a minute to vote and comment on each parody submitted if they have not previously done so. One of the parodies in today's "A" contest had no comments at all till I added one, and several hardly had any votes. Make an author happy today! :D

Couldn't agree more, 'doc.  I tried to make the regular vote more or less a requirement in the earlier tournament but obviously there's no way to enforce it.  Most participants were wonderful and did vote and comment on just about everything, and I think the ones that didn't probably meant to but just never got around to it.  With the SOTM contest, the voting period is a good three+ weeks so there should be plenty of time to give every song a good look at least.  I do, however, feel strongly that people who want everyone to download the original if they don't know it, should make it easier for them to do so by providing a link themselves.

Thanks for your input Claude. :)

As for downloading, I personally prefer to get the songs myself in my own time, rather than clicking on a link (I even created a little file called "songs for voting parodies" to keep them all handy - that way I can delete them when I am done, unless they are especially good - that Christina Aguilera one is gonna go away real fast after I use it... ::) ), but I can see how many people would like to have the link, so it is a good suggestion.

Pippin and I intend to provide the links to our own if they are songs that people might not know; we have already done so in the B contest and in yours; we figured "Horse with No Name" in the A contest was pretty widely known... :)

I also agree.

If I have done the hard work of getting there and finding the song, the easy part is the vote and comment!  :)

Merry - do you download the entire song, when you find an original song for a tune someone has parodied?

I can usually scrounge up a 30-second sample or two of most any song for free...

...but do you have a line on getting free entire songs without attracting the wrath of the copyright gods?  ;)

Good question!  Johnny, lately you have not been leaving any song links.
