OK, I took you up on your challenge, Philbo..........I just submitted "The Sinking of The Patriarch", a parody of Woody Guthrie's World War 2 ballad "The Sinking of The Reuben James".

Hmm... I´ve made a first verse for a suitable song: AC/DC´s "SINK THE PINK" from "Fly On The Wall". (Original words to the left, please feel free to pick up where I leave off and we might have a monkey project):

SINK THE PINK                               SANK THE CHURCH

Put your gear into fire                      When my soul´s in for fire
Lay your bullets on the ground          When my bible´s on the ground
Turn your head to desire                  When I´m wet from desire
There's a woman going down            When my clergy´s going down
She said she'll rough you up, all the way          I´ll join a maiden trip, just to pray
And she gonna spit you out, count your days   Whales are gonna spit me out, if I´m gay
She says "choice is yours," casually                   SS Church Afloat, casually
"So why don't you do what comes naturally"    But now I´ve joined Jonah unnaturally

CHORUS:
Sink the pink, it's all the fashion           Sank the Church, ´twas like Titanic
Drink the drink, it's old-fashioned          Felt the lurch, that caused panic
Gimme water, gimme wine                 Here comes water, make me float
Gonna show you a good time              Better show me the life boat
Sink the pink                                     Sank the Church
Sink the pink                                     Sank the Church

-------------------------------------- I guess the second verse has to be about why the church sank, if there´s gonna be some logic-------------------------

Got a fever runnin' high
Give you wings to make you fly
She school you like a fool
She make you break the rules
She wanna get a shot, hit the spot
Then I'm gonna rack 'em up, get that hot
She said "make it good, satisfy"
You know that woman got jealous eyes

CHORUS

(want you to sink it for me)

Sink the pink,
Sink the pink,
it's all the fashion
Drink the drink,
Drink the drink, it's old-fashioned
Give you water, give you wine
Gonna show you a good time
Sink the pink
Sink the pink
Sink the pink
Sink the pink
oh, oh, oh
Sink the pink

Cox the Healer remained dry
Gimmick Ship just sank- goodbye!
God's rule did strike his jewel.
Submerged to purge this fool
Cox wants the Bible taught on his yacht,
But ol' God was crackin' up, wet that plot.
He said "Take that, depravity!
No go, such blatant rot, pub-lic'ty."

Sank the Church, that lame promotion.
Now to search: the congregation.
Freezing water, all baptized.
Cox promotes a church that flies.
Sank the church.
Felt the lurch.
Fell off perch.
Now to search.
Glub glub glub
Sank the church.

Can I just say trying to find rhymes for 'church' makes me appreciate how this wasn't a sinking synagogue (of that sinnin' dog in his swimmin' togs.)

Freezing water, all baptized

Glub glub glub

I especially love those two lines Luke! :-)

I´m changin my part from first person to rather neutral, so that it better fits with yours. Also made some minor alterations to a couple of your lines. Feel free to put final polishing touch on it and then post it on the site, don´t forget to include Phil´s link though.  //  Peter

Where there´s souls in for fire
Where there´s Bibles on the ground
Where they´re wet from desire
There´s a clergy going down
Cox made a maiden trip, three to pray
Whales were there to stake them out, made them gay
SS Church-Afloat, casually
But now they´ve joined Jonah un-naturally

Sank the Church, ´twas like Titanic
Woah, the lurch, that caused panic
There was water, but no float
Better place was, the life boat
Sank the Church
Woah, the lurch

Cox the Healer remained dry
Gimmick Ship just sank - Goodbye
God´s rule did strike his jewel
Submerged to purge this fool
Cox wants the Bible taught on his yacht
But ol´ God was crackin´ up, wet that plot
He said "Take that de-pravity
No go, such blatant rot, pub-lic´ty"

Sank the Church, through locomotion
Now it´s found, in the ocean
Freezing water, all baptized
Irish moral, stays pint-sized
Sank the Church
Woah, the lurch

Sank the Church, ´twas like Titanic
Felt the lurch, it caused panic
There was water, but no float
Better place was, the life boat
Fell off perch
Now to search
Glub - Glub - Glub
Sank the Church

Also made some minor alterations to a couple of your lines.

That is, as long as you consider changing three whole lines a minor adjustment. ;-)
