I think Robert overworks the wimmaways too much - your thoughts?

I'm most familiar with the Robert John version, but I credited The Tokens when I wrote my parody "The Prion Sleeps Tonight":

http://www.amiright.com/parody/60s/thetokens7.shtml

BTW, the ridiculously long list I posted on this thread is an edited version of a "Top 1000 Songs Of All Time" list I found on the web awhile back, it's not necessarily a list of all the songs I like to parody.   But a lot of the songs that I like to parody do show up on that list.

I saw "Last Post:  Luke Brattoni" and thought uh oh, he's gonna blast me for pinching his "swish"

Johnny, your top 1000 songs list is now MY top 1000 songs list - thanks for that (and I didn't really read them all - just looked for something to make out I did ;))

BUt I think this is an EXCELLENT topic for a thread
everyone has their favourite OS, eg. Michael Pacholek/Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald, and Philbo/Be Our Guest

I'd like to hear what other writers would choose if forced to write a parody in 5 minutes.
apart from obvious ones like Yesterday and Supercalifragilistic....

My favourite is Somethin' Stoopid, because its long lines and its emphasis on every 4th syllable allows flexibility in wording

and Let It Be, Simply Irresistible, Paint It Black, and Seasons In The Sun are easy to work with, and easy to insert gags into

It's probably not one that anyone else likes to parody...but I can do a "Luka" parody anytime day or night.  I think I've submitted 3...but I seriously do like one a week...just in conversation...not writing anything down.

I wouldn't mind doing a parody to this song, but only if it involved your favorite Harry Potter character.

In my time here, I have learned that NO SONG CANNOT BE PARODIED---but albeit not necessarily well.

However, good songs to parody have an undeniable lyric hook in the chorus--this is what has helped Weird Al feed himself for nearly 25 years. The trick of a good parody writer, though,  is also to change that chorus every (or nearly) every time it is sung (cf. Weird Al's "Eat It" and  "Complicated Song").

A substantial amount of lyrics in the OS is helpful, but not necessary either--two or three verses might be enough to carry out some semblance of a story, or at least a fully realized concept. Short songs usually can be parodied best if it's part of a thematic song cycle (cf. various authors' parodies here  of The Wall, Dark Side of the Moon, or my Commercial Album).  It's always a disappointment for me when someone writes a parody that doesn't cover all the OS verses.

And of course, it's always helpful if you parody a song that "eveybody knows". Which has been proven time and again here that that's not a steady rule to go by, either.  ;)

The list I posted here is a modified version of the list I originally found on the web ... I added some songs that weren't on the original list and then posted the modified list here.

I don't have the URL of where I found the original list.  I recommend going to Google and searching for "Top 1000 Songs Of All Time" or something similar.

Can't believe that your list didn't have the Disney classics for parody "Under the Sea" and "Be Our Guest" - those must be two of the best to parody

"Complicated" is actually quite a good one, too... it's just that "Constipated" is too obvious a title ;)

And just about anything by G&S makes a good parody.  There's an excellent Ruddigore one up today.

Well, I just found a song listing for my 'Groovin' CD on the net.  It doesn't have 'Let's Live For Today', but it does have a recording of the Grass Roots' 'Midnight Confessions'... which is weird, because I was just thinking about that song this morning after someone made a comment on Johnny D's 'Fetish' parody today thanking him for his 'midnight confessions'...

'Piece of work'. That's the terminology for ALL employees.
I had a group job interview yesterday with three others. One was Indian, one was Pakistani and one was a chocco (see 'Fat Pizza'.)
They're all whipping out VISAs and passports and legalese documents, I just had my birth certificate and license.
The Indian girl was all 'My father was a CEO of a large company back in India, so I have experience in all aspects of sales.'
The Paksitani guy was all 'I've worked on and off for Myer for the past six years, especially selling designer labels.'
The chocco was all 'I've been in charge of managerial work for the past four years in three of your company's chains.'

And then I'm all 'Sorry, I won't be able to work in any of the liquor related chains. I've never had a job before, so don't have any references. Does helping frail old wheelchair-bound ladies do their shopping count for anything?'

For me the best songs to parody are the ones that have been parodied ( atleast on www.amiright.com ) less than 4 times. ( Shamless plug coming.........quit reading now if you have the chance. ) Out of my 72 or so submissions, probably 25+ have NEVER been parodied before, and atleast one submission is from an entire band that has never been parodied before. Just because you're the first doesn't mean best, but I generally dislike being the 50th person to parody a song ( I have done " Yesterday " and " Bohemian Rhapsody " though and a few others with 10+ submissions ). Of course, these generally get few votes but that's okay as well.

i think it's best to do parodies of current hits, but lots of people here seem to boycott the radio stations that play those songs.

"best" is a fairly objective word to use for a subjective choice: the main problem I have with doing current hits is that means I actually have to listen to the songs :-p (why isn't there a "covering your ears" smiley?)

I will admit though, that like Claude I like trying to find songs that haven't been done before - it's happened once or twice, I guess.

I don't see a Claude here ( may have missed a subname or post that was deleted ). * IF * you are referring to me most of the stuff I parody is over 10 years old ( mostly alternative ). I agree that most music today almost parodies itself and can barely stand most newer bands ( and detest MTV ).

Sorry, Red Ant - I assumed the Bazooka Boy avatar was Claude's.  In that case I'd like to correct my previous statement to the effect that I agree with the carmine insect's earlier statement.  I would go back and change the post, but that would make the above exchange extremely confusing ;)

I'll say - I tried putting it all into a flow-chart but I still can't figure it out  :-[  - including Red Ant's gag about 9 quarter lives - shouldn't the gag be 36 quarter-lives - or did my logic turn left when it should've turned right?
