Subject: Top 90 Most Parodied Songs on AmIRight

Written By: Red Ant on 11/05/05 at 11:56 pm

While using the new search engine I've come across a few OSs that have been parodied extensively. This list isn't meant to discourage anyone from writing more parodies set to certain OSs, more of a parody "stats" list if you will that may be of interest to a few people. Probably not. The numbers listed will change over time of course, I'll update them occasionally.

While using the new search engine I've come across a few OSs that have been parodied extensively. This list isn't meant to discourage anyone from writing more parodies set to certain OSs (and is not all inclusive); more of a parody "stats" list if you will that may be of interest to a few people. Probably not.

Listed are the 15 most parodied songs on AmIRight (that I know of).

Yesterday by The Beatles has 113 entries. If you count the 200+ parodies of the "Jesterdays" thread we're well above 300 parodies of this OS.

13 of "Skater" and 136 as Sk8 giving 149 of Avril Lavigne's "Sk8er Boi".

Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen has 138 entries.

American Pie by Don McClean has 111 entries.

Complicated by Avril Lavigne has 93 entries. Probably a few more given the innumerable ways people spell Avril's name and "Complicated".  ::)

Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana has 86 entries.

Oops I Did It Again by Britney Spears has 85 entries. 92 are shown for "Oops" search but 7 are not that OS.

Let It Be by The Beatles has 76 entries.

Supercali.....by Mary Poppins et al has 60 entries.

Yellow Submarine by The Beatles has 58 entries.

The Sound of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel has 58 entries.

The Major-General's Song by Gilbert & Sullivan has 54 entries. 32 of these have been done since March of 2005.

Help! by The Beatles has 53 entries.

Lucky by Britney Spears has 46 entries.

Paperback Writer by The Beatles has 45 entries.

Eleanor Rigby by The Beatles has 43 entries.

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot has 41 entries.

Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) by Green Day has 41 entries.

There are surely more songs out there with more than 41 parodies set to them. I feel like I'm missing some obvious ones here so if you all know any with 40+ parodies please list them. We can expand this list to 20, 50, etc but to make a top 50 list it'll probably need more than 30 entries.

The engine is sensitive to punctuation and obviously spelling, try to be as generic as possible when searching for songs to get as many matches as possible. For now please list songs with 35 or more entries that you come across.

Geez, Red,  I've only parodied ONE of these songs (Paperback Writer) in all my time here...I know I have consciously avoided a couple or so on this list because they have been done SO much...but, that said, if I came up with a good enough idea for any of them I would go ahead and write/post it...but it would have to be VERY good for me to want to bother.

Interesting to actually see the numbers, though...

Frank Sinatra "Love and Marriage" = 40
(possibly more listed as theme songs)

Village People "YMCA" = 29
And as "Y.M.C.A" = 31

Makes for at least 60 anyway

We're now at 40 OSs that have 40 or more parodies to their credit. There are numerous that are close to 40 that I found but didn't list.

If you find any above 40 that are not on the main list, please add them. You may add anything with 35 or more parodies though they may not make the top 50 list. If you could copy/paste the URL of your search here it would save me a few minutes. Thanks.

EDIT: The numbers I listed are not 100% accurate and will no doubt change in the future. I'll try to update this list on occasion, like every 4-6 months or so.

Chucky specifically outlines that entire song parodies must be submitted. As the Jesterdays are only the chorus, they qualify as parody excerpts, not parodies in themselves. So I think Avril should get the crown rightly so.

I'm sure there are a few more, perhaps traditional tunes or musical productions. There are also several at 38 or 39, just waiting for one more parody. I'll add this one later tonight.

BTW, "Sk8er Boi" hit 150 the day after this list was posted.

I checked up on some of Michael Jacksons, Madonna's, Prince's, The Clash's, The Who's and some traditionals and got nothing above 40, but a whole lot in the range between 20 and 35.

If you lower the limit to 25 you'd probably get a whole load of more entries right away and a thread that could run on forever with new entries at least a couple of times per month (or so I think). Remember that 25 is also the limit for authors personal bio, so it's a nice match to that (and could probably be transformed into an AmIright official feature somehow, in the long rum).

OK, that would also mean much more work for you to keep it up to date, so I won't hold it against you if you don't wanna, just thinking out loud here about what the possibilities are.

Additional: Maybe such a list could be created via the database, by Chucky himself, and you could be the official scout for wrongfully spelled original titles and correction thereof, so as to keep the list as accurate as possible.

I never claimed to be against parodies of classics, just against shunning new music.  Back when we had the old search function, I could've easily listed how many parodies i have from each decade, but the new way doesn't sort by decade. But I can tell that I've done more parodies of beatles songs than of any other artist.

I'm sorry, I have obviously not been giving you credit and respect for your full spectrum and range as a parodist. But it's never to late to start, right?

There are way too many between 25 and 35, that would easily exceed a top 100 list.

I still am open to entries with 35 or more, there are several I forgot to write down when I was looking.

Chucky might create a database, I made the searches as generic as possible to account for misspellings. Example; the "American Idiot" by Green Day just searches for "Idiot" and "day" because a few people misspelled American and also made Green Day into Greenday. Decade flubs don't matter either.

I'm sure he could set up a code to automatically adjust the numbers and rank them accordingly based on the searches I listed. It's just a matter of whether or not he wants to.

So, this will be added to the list:

Is there a list of most parodied artists?

At one point I started a list of the most parodied artists. Here it is (it's quite old and incomplete):

The Beatles at 1901 songs.

Traditional Songs are at 1093 songs. And yes, they are of varying origin.

Britney Spears at 491 songs.

Avril Lavigne at 364 songs.

Nirvana at 277 songs.

Green Day at 271 songs.

Linkin Park at 268 songs.

Michael Jackson at 196 songs.

I might work on that some next year. If anyone wants to add to this list, go for it. For now, list artists with 200 or more entries only please.

If you're that interested in the lists, you could help make them. Combing all the artists and doing the messageboard code for them isn't easy.

I noticed that the Beatles are over 2500 entries - the search function can't go higher than that.

I know I'm at at least 30 now but that's probably further from #1 than 28 was in 2005
