Subject: Dee Range/ Rick Cormier awarded SONG OF THE DAY at Garageband.com

Written By: Dee Range on 09/03/06 at 3:30 am

Congratulations to my good friend Rick Cormier, who sang and recorded my parody "16 Sons".

I uploaded it into the Garageband.com contest Friday, and just received an email from them an hour ago. Here it is:

Anyone with ideas about a funny photo to use, please either post it here or PM me....I have no digital camera or photo of myself to post for our band, which is called "Dee Range and The Red Neck Mothers"

(Yeah, I know, I know, but it is better than the name of my high school band, The Rubber Buttermilk LOL)

And thanks to Rick and also Spaff, who encouraged me to record this. Rick put a ton of time into recording this and 3 other songs, and I'm glad to see his effort pay off.

Wow, Dee, that is really cool but, I'm afraid I'm gonna miss it. I am at Cape Cod and will not have access to a computer after tomorrow (Monday). I am logged in to my friend's son's laptop right now but, they're leaving tomorrow. I was surprised I was even able to get on the internet tonight, since they are not connected here but, are piggybacking on someone else's wireless connection.

Anyway, I will be incommunicado until a week from tomorrow so, let me know how that turns out, OK Dee?

Thanks,

Rick

Stu, Rex, And Johnny D., thanks so much for all the kind words. Here are the reviews of 16 sons, reviewed by Garageband.com bands, that they were talking about in the email they sent me:

Band: Dee Range and The Red Neck Mothers
Genre: Comedy

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
hmm
I can relate to this song because I have the same taste in music. Has a funky little rythme to it and I can snap my fingers.
- Breakel from Sicklerville, New Jersey on 3Sep2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some good work.
Vocals in this track are super idealistic to the bluesy subgenre and the performance and production are both good. Lyrics, although not amazingly funny are interesting and hold listeners attention. Overall, some good work.
- TheBadgerFamine from United Kingdom on 3Sep2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
real cool guy
who sings. But hmm I reconize this song, isnt it the original? Is it a cover..hmm!
But either way, really good song.
- violentgreen from Sweden on 3Sep2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Really funny lyrics
This I like... the lyrics are really funny, and while the music is a little too simplistic, it's quite catchy. The nice thing about comedy is that REALLY good lyrics can overcome not so good music and vice-versa. You've done the first very well. So the trailer-trash thing is a song idea that is really easy to make fun of, but you've done a good job of taking it beyond that and actually making some good lyrics out of it.

What I would like to see is these lyrics with a REAL song... not to take away from what you've done, but I mean a full band kind of thing. That would be interesting to hear.
- Joe_Maximus from Unspecified on 2Sep2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Trailer Park Trash
HE STUCK HIS POLE IN A MARGINAL HOLE... omg I just pissed myself.

The vocals remind me of the guy who sings that "You've got sixteen stones..." song. The lyrics are clever and subtle in their brilliance. Not much swearing... it's a thinking man's humor. The best kind.

Good work, solid musicianship, good luck!
- nocompromise from Unspecified on 2Sep2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nice one!
Love the original, what can I say? You didn't ruin the song, so... well done. Nice clarinet (if it's not synthesized). Hmm. Not sure about the lyrics, they're a little obscure. Well constructed instrumentation, although I prefer the original, as I grew up with it...
- Coasterbrock from Norwich, United Kingdom on 2Sep2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You Should Be Teaching a Class on this
GREAT parody. Performed well, clever, relies on lyrics to be funny and not "funny sounds" or "funny words."

"Don't know what's for dinner but it sits on a Ritz" is nothing but pure genius.

This is so much better than most of the "comedy" out here. Excellent job. You should give comedy writing lessons to the folks out here that think a comedy song is just funny sounds on the keyboard and saying cuss words.
- dweeks from Minier, Illinois on 2Sep2006

Jeff and Kristof, thanks so much for the kind words. The reviews from Garageband.com bands have vaulted Rick's recording of 16 Sons into 10th place after only 6 days. There are 83 songs in this contest (so far), so to pass 73 of them is a testament to Rick's skills as a vocalist and recording engineer...he is fantastic. I hope the recording keeps doing well....there are 5 rounds, I think, with the top 20% advancing into the next round. Will keep you updated.

Hope you are back from your vacation and are enjoying all this. For some reason you also made the charts in folk at # 47 in the folk chart.....I entered 16 Sons in the comedy genre only, but you have somehow cross-pollinated the charts!

16 Sons is now in the 2nd round of the contest. Keep you'all updated. ;)

Congratulations, guys! A truly catchy tune and some brilliant vocal performance there.

By the way, thanks for re-opening my wounds of GarageBand withdrawals. My high school only just got it installed as I was leaving, so I only ever did one song ('Chemo Bobby'... the most productive three hours of distortion and editing of my life) and have been itching to get back on it ever since. Grrrr... keep up the great work, fullas!

Wow! Sounds like I missed quite a lot while I was away. So, Dee, this contest is still running?

Where do I go to find out the rules, etc. In a couple of the reviews, the reviewer is hinting that the music is the original song. How do I post a response to let them know that I did all of the music but, kept it pretty close to what I heard on Tennessee Ernie Ford's recording?

I did click on the link you provided above but, don't know anything about Garageband.com. Great job getting it into their hands though!

I've got a ton of parody reading, voting and commenting to catch up on so, I'd better get at it. Talk to you later. :) :) :)

Rick, glad to see ya' back. When you search out and find 16 sons and click on a review, you will see the band who reviewed it underlined in the bottom right hand corner. Click on that link, and it will take you to their band page, which has a "Send Band A Message" button.....click on that and a message box will pop up where you can either thank them for their nice words, or, in the case of the guy whose headline read "Parodies are Terrible", you can give them a piece of your mind.....which I did LOL. I listened to his song on his band page and sent him my own private review via message, which was pretty blunt in all honesty.

The contest is still running, we made it to round 2.

By the way, anyone else with recordings out there, you can enter the Garageband.com contest one of two ways:

    1. Review 15 pairs of songs, which give you a free upload credit

or

    2. Pay 19.95

It is a good chance to get actual musicians to review your music, with a chance to get played on Yahoo Launch Radio, or even signed. Many winners of these contests have signed Major Label contracts , and several have ranked high on Billboard's charts. It is kind of like a web based American Idol LOL. Every review is public, and the band who reviewed it is also public, unlike Amiright, where any A-hole can vote 1-1-1 without leaving a name. At GB, even the REVIEWS are reviewed, and rated by third party bands. It is quite an involved process, but one where you can get an honest...sometimes brutally honest...opinion of your music by people not afraid to sign their names.

Congrats again, Rick, and hope 16 Sons keeps doing well in the contest, which lasts 5 rounds, I believe.

I finally listened to your recorded parody "16 Sons". First of all, I have to say Rick did an excellent job sticking true to TOS and sounding very much like Tennessee Ernie Ford. And, as I said in PM, 16 Sons is one of my all time favorite parodies on the site. The lyrics were awesome back in April 2005 and they still are in September 2006.

One minor problem, which has nothing to do with the song at all. When I accessed Dee's band page from the news/recording article from AmiRight and tried to play the lo-fi files, they didn't play. Neither did the hi-fi.  Only after I went to the "music" link (second on the right below "Main Artist Page") did it play for me.

Keep up the great work guys!

So what's the latest? Did garageband.com officially crown you king(s) yet?

I'm also looking forward to hearing this on Dr. Demento. He records his shows three weeks ahead of time but rarely lets on about the playlists until a day or two before the shows air, so I've learned you gotta be patient there.

Thanks, Spaffster, for all your kind words. 16 Sons is currently ranked #10 in comedy, down from a high of #3 a couple of weeks ago, so we haven't been crowned yet....unless you count the Crown and Coke I had last night

I have not heard back from Dr Demento after mailing the mp3 to him, and had written it off....after your comment about his secrecy, now I have hopes again, damn you. Just kiddding.

I would also encourage you and Robert Lund to upload a song or two to Garageband. Your material, and Robert's recordings, are so good you have a great chance to win a contest and get a lot of exposure to industry bigwigs....several GB artists have signed Major Label contracts and even topped the Billboard charts. The music industry actively scouts GB now, and their ability to view written reviews by other GB artists, as well as seeing GB chart rankings, goes a long way in determing their course of action. I know I speak for the VAST MAJORITY here at Amiright in saying I/we would love to see you hit the BIG TIME Spaff. And when you do, remember I do interview your potential groupies for you, right? ;)

Heh heh.

OK, I'll check out garageband.com. Do you know of any bands who were actually discovered there and went on to top the Billboard charts, or is that just what their marketing says? I'm hesitant to enter another online community because I already get crap for not doing enough for the ones I'm in, but it would certainly be worth a foray if it's a ticket to the BIG TIME.

Meanwhile, congrats on staying in the top ten. It sounds like YOU'RE the one with all the groupies. (Isn't "Red Neck Mothers" just a euphemism for "groupies"?)

Spaff, here is a partial list of Garageband artists who have made Billboard charts:

TEN YEARS        Their hit "Wasteland" made #1 on Billboard in 2006

      Stormtroopers      Hit #5 on Billboard

Jenna Drey          Hit #6 on Billboard

      Geoff Byrd            Hit #45

Salme                  Her music is being used in Miller Lite ads

This information is displayed on Garageband.com's home page here:  http://www.garageband.com/htdb/index.html.

They have revolving banner ads at the bottom of the home page that gives out this information.

I know you have had a lot of media exposure already, but this is another venue which you can gain additional media attention from, and with your humor, may get offers from other areas like advertising, jingle writing, etc. The sky is the limit for you, my man.

You can also link back to your home page from GB, sell CD's from there, podcast, and host all your music there if you choose. It was chosen as one of the top 50 websites in 2003, and has over 100,000 bands who make it their home so to speak.

Good luck!!! and remember us when you are on tour!

OK, Dee, you win.

"Spaff.com & Robert Lund" now has a band profile at garageband.com: http://www.garageband.com/artist/spaff

I've uploaded a grand total of one song: http://www.garageband.com/song?|pe1|S8LTM0LdsaSlZlmxY2E

It's "We Drank a Toast to Underpants," which they say will be their track of the day (presumably just in the comedy section?) on Tuesday the 7th. The address will be http://www.GarageBand.com/go/A2AMXCPBX0

Meanwhile, renewed congratulations for the success of "16 Sons" over there; I see that after all these months it's STILL high in the charts. As soon as I have a chance to putz around a bit more on the site and figure out how to leave an enthusiastic review for it, I will do so.

Final update for Rick Cormier's recording of my parody 16 Sons in the Garageband, com Comedy Song contest.

Rick, we made it as high as #2 in the Comedy contest in the 2nd round, but that's as far as we got, darn it. However, 16 Sons is #22 on the "All Time Comedy Chart", which I consider fantastic. There have been thousands of songs in the 6 years of these contests, and #22 All Time ain't bad for a couple guys from Amiright working on a shoestring budget going up against high-dollar professionally  produced entries.

Thanks again, Rick, for your fantastic vocals and the superb recording. I wish you and Stu would enter "You and Me Betty Ain't Nothin' But Trouble" in the Garageband.com contest. I know it would do fantastically well.

PM me if you have any questions about how to enter. Good luck if you do!! :)

I've been trying for the past week to enter it but it won't accept my Visa details - I've tried using the visacard to buy a backing track and it worked fine, but there must be a problem with the detail submission form at garageband - maybe because I'm from outside the US

I'll try again now - and if not I might have to put an hour of my time into doing 15 reviews - after figuring how to do that of course

or can someone maybe do it for me? - my Visa card number is 4545 3567 4572 1991 expiry 13/2011

I've tried calling you collect from the slammer, but they won't let me call 'Down Under". Could you please call the Hollywood Jail and tell them I have permission to use that card? They are playing hardball, thinking I used a counterfeit card, even going so far as to throw me in a cell with Paris Hilton. Now that is cruel and unusual punishment, if you ask me. ;)

Stu, to review, you have to register your band with GB, and go through the review process. Or you can send an email to this girl, who has answered some questions for me in the past, and might help with your Visa problem:  jennifer@ilike-inc.com>. Her name is Jennifer Carafelli, and works admin for Garageband.com.

Good luck, mate! :) :) :)

whoops, I should have elaborated (or PM'd you at least) Rick

I did do that - our band-name is "rustic mccormier"  anagram of ric and stu, followed by mash-up of mcarthur and cormier

trouble is, you have to enter the contests to get any attention, and it won't accept my visa card, although I've today emailed someone who Dee thinks might be able to help with that

if it still doesn't accept (and the card works on every other goddamn website - too readily if anything - I guess I'll have to review 15 parodies to give the masterpiece the chance it deserves ;)

trouble is, you have to enter the contests to get any attention, and it won't accept my visa card, although I've today emailed someone who Dee thinks might be able to help with that

if it still doesn't accept (and the card works on every other goddamn website - too readily if anything - I guess I'll have to review 15 parodies to give the masterpiece the chance it deserves ;)

Sounds like you've got it under control, Stu. Let me know if I can help.

Stu...and Rick...when "Me and Betty" speeds up the charts, (and I have no doubts it will), please stop and say 'high'...and wave 'bye'... to my OS "The T.V Evangelical Hall Of Shame", which Rick and I recorded last fall.

It somehow made it into the second round, mostly thanks to Rick's brilliant impression of Bill Clinton in the last verse.

The current standings in the comedy contest can be found here: http://www.garageband.com/genre/comedy

The "Hall Of Shame" now sits in 4th place, but I have no doubts "Me and Betty" is going to speed past it like a rocket...seriously, it is that good, and has a very realistic chance to win, IMO. The best of luck to you both, and it's great to have some more Amirighters exposing themselves (Does that sound as weird as I think?) on Garageband.

I also hope you record some more parodies together. "ME and BETTY" is too good NOT to keep going!

Keep 'em rolling ;)

Hi Rick and Dee

I've done it - I didn't realise my bank had switched from Visa to Mastercard so I needed a whole new set of numbers as of last week

all done though now - it's in the next contest and needs reviews and thumbs-ups to get into the next round

any amirighters willing to volunteer some of those will be warmly appreciated

:)

I've reviewed my way through 20 songs and haven't come across "Me And Betty" yet. I'm taking a break, in case it doesn't hit the queue until later tonight. When Spaff uploaded his, It was about the 10th song up to be reviewed, so I hope it comes through pretty soon. Hang in there :-)

Stu and Rick, I've reviewed 30 songs so far and "Me And Betty didn't pop up yet.

In case you are not familiar with Garageband's review process, it is completely randomized, other than genre, which a reviewer can pick.

This is their system designed to prevent crony ism and ensure impartiality.

So no one can CHOOSE to review a particular song at will. All you can do is pick the comedy genre and start reviewing whatever pops up in the mp3 player, and hope the song you want comes along soon.

While disappointed that I didn't come across Me and Betty yet, it wasn't a waste of time. I earned a free entry into the contest, so I'm recording "Cummin' and 'a Shoutin" to enter into the contest. It has been well received on JibJab, so I think I'll see how GB likes it.

I checked your band page, and haven't seen ANY reviews yet, so it is probably waiting in line to be reviewed. Once it gets a review, they will start coming quickly. The better the review, the more often it WILL be reviewed, and shoot up the charts.

Hang in there ;)

sorry Dee - I didn't see these last two posts

I just PM'd you, but thanks publicly also, for doing all that supportive stuff - the site is quite confusing for newbies (simple newbies I mean) and I didn't realise you couldn't choose which songs to review - I'll persevere and try to figure it all out

:)
