Subject: An amIright PARODY book? Would you be interested in contributing?

Written By: ChuckyG on 03/02/07 at 10:52 am

Before I get too far, let me state:

No one has approached me for such a book.
I probably couldn't pay much to the authors of the parodies.

I just submitted the final draft of the misheard lyrics book to my publisher Monday (Sunday night if you want to be technical).  I then receive an email from a different publisher two days later asking if I was interested in doing a book.  They didn't know about the first, and I can't do another misheard lyrics book until the first has been published, even then, the original publisher has right of first refusal for the next book. So I let publisher #2 know that.

However...

They did mention I should send them any book proposals I had.  The misheard lyrics book publisher, wasn't interested in the song parody idea when I first pitched it as part of the misheard lyrics book.  So I was thinking of doing a quick book proposal around the parody idea, plus some other sections from the site I didn't use for the first book as well.

So, before I try to send a proposal, I figured I should make sure people would be open to the idea of me including their parodies in a "songbook" of sorts. I would never include a single parody without asking permission from the authors naturally.

As for the money side of things... Let's say I got something similar to what I got for the first book... and I used 100 or so parodies... the best I think I could offer would be a flat $10 per parody.  Knowing what the royalties are before a book sells sufficient quantities, I doubt I could offer more unless the book became a best seller.  It's not really much, so I don't know if that's insulting to people or not.  I'm sure Spaff has seen much more than that for some of his better work.

On the plus side, inclusion in a book would certainly be a great proof of copyright, and I don't want exclusive rights over the song or anything.  I'd have to make sure the publisher knows that the songs could still be republished (though not as a whole, ie. they have the rights to the collection, me or someone else wouldn't have the right to republish all 100 parodies or something).

I haven't even figured out what such a book would look like exactly... I was thinking a political section, with left leaning parodies on the left pages, and right leaning parodies on the right pages for a section would be funny... Maybe mimic an old song book someone might find in a yard sale or something...

If you're interested, respond with links to a few of your BEST parodies... stuff that got a good response that you like.  That way I at least can throw together a sample to throw out there to a few different people.

Did I mention publisher #2 is a nationally recognized name?  Not that I've sent them anything yet or not... but yeah, when I saw the name I had wished they contacted me before publisher #1... though the folks at #1 are smaller and quite supportive, etc.

I'd be happy to have my work included, and don't need any income for it so long as it is credited to Below Average Dave

I think it would be a lovely idea, and I would imagine most writers would be thrilled to see their parodies in print, even at a very small renumeration.

May I respectfully make one suggestion however?

I would suggest that political parodies NOT be included. It is very very difficult to write a political parody that is truly funny to everyone, and the potential of angering people of all persuasions is too great. I would say 95% of all political parodies that show up on Amiright end up sounding mean-spirited to those of the opposite spectrum, even if the author truly did not intend it to be that way. This goes for both left and right wing based parodies.

I know when I choose to read parodies, I want to be entertained, not irritated.

I believe if you want to keep the book light, funny, enjoyable and accessable to all you should reconsider the inclusion of all political parodies.

Thanks for reading. Opinions welcome. :)

Another problem with political stuff is that by the time the book gets published then the parody will be outdated. Same with most current events parodies.

This is an interesting idea.

wow Chucky - the temptation is to give you all of them....

(btw I don't want a cent and I'd be honoured to be in your book - make as much money as you can, mate - it will only ever be just a hobby for me)

...but then I thought there are criteria that should be satisfied here, from the publisher's viewpoint such as

1. no political parodies, for the 2 reasons given above
2. no potentially libellous, or nasty, or sarcastic work
3. the original song must be universally known
4. the title must be catchy enough to make the reader want to read it (the same with each blurb)
5. the subject matter should be universally funny, or appealing, or identifiable

so that narrowed my choices down to these 20, all of which you can do with what you like

99 Rubber Boobs  to "99 Red Balloons" - about a mishap in breast implant clinic

Gwyneth Has A Rethink  to "Both Sides Now" - about Gwyneth Paltrow's odd choice of baby names

Up! Down! Hurl! to "Uptown Girl" - about the perils of riding a roller coaster

Film-Cliche-Fan Rhapsody to "Bohemian Rhapsody" - see how many film cliches you can spot

Sick Of Low-Fat to "Hit The Road Jack" - about having a gutful of fad diets

Trivia Skills Won't Take You Too Far to "Video Killed The Radio Star" - about the lack of uses for useless info

No Regretto...Priscilla Honey to "In The Ghetto" - the truth about Elvis and Priscilla's split, in Elvis's words

Quite A Laidback Jail to "Whiter Shade Of Pale" - you can check out any time you like and you'd never WANT to leave

Everybody Must Get Phoned to "Everybody Must Get Stoned" - about the tyranny of call centres

The Chihuahua to "Something Stupid" - about something stupid

The Ballad Of Boopsie's Bazookas to "Battle Hymn Of The Republic" - the unfolding drama of an ambitious flat girl

It's Smelly...In Delhi to "Don't Worry...Be Happy" - useful world travel advice

Guilty Teeth Have Frogs Legs Bitten to "Careless Whispers" - and I'll never go to France again

What's With Donald Trump's Hair? to "I Saw Her Standing There" - I still remember the first time I saw it

Workin' In Japan to "Workin' For The Man" - they do things differently over there

Duelling Mangoes to "Duelling Banjoes" - Fruit with attitude

Talk Like A Beautician to "Walk Like An Egyptian" - yeah like, whoa, like whatever...

Play Madonna's Movies to "Blame It On The Boogie" - Madonna's lesser moments

You And Me Betty Aint Nuthin But Rubbles to "Bad Touch" - the Flintstones after dark

You Aint My Husband Yet to "You Aint Seen Nothing Yet" - the workings of the wily woman's mind

I might be in the minority, but I prefer the work of the Capitol Steps to that of Weird Al, and I do think political parodies can be very funny, even if they poke fun at my party.  Having said that, it seems that a book of AmiRight parodies might be very left-heavy, especially since Guy DiRito and Royce Miller don’t seem to be around to give their approval for including their work.

Would the book include the author’s introductory comments or just the lyrics?

I'm interested! Let's see, which would I want published...

The book is a great idea. I'd love to be included. If you credit me and my website, you can keep the money.

I'm sure Spaff has seen much more than that for some of his better work.

Heh heh. I wish. I had a syndicated DJ named Bo Reynolds offer me $300 apiece to write parodies for him. I wrote two. He loved them. He never paid me. I stopped writing for him. Butthole.

Here are a few of mine that might work in print:

88 Lines About 140 Discontinued Varieties at 31 Flavors
Eat the French
A Few of My Resolutions
I Feel Happy (and Sneezy and...)
I Swear This Is the Last Time I'll Go Boating with Odysseus
Me and Mayor McCheese
Shakespearean Pie
Supertelevangelistic Sex-and-Drugs Psychosis

If the book actually happens, you've gotta include some Claude Prez stuff. If he doesn't suggest a few, I will.

Also, politics is the reason satire exists. You'd be nuts to exclude it.

I agree most current events parodies would be out of date, but some political topics just never die... no matter how much you want them to.

I'm thinking a small section with a little from either side should be ok, it'll be balanced anyways

Great idea, Chucky - were you thinking of categorizing by topic, genre or anything?

Has to be a rhapsody of some kind, either Homerian or a Venerial Crabsody

Can't do without the occasional techie parody... Mend My PC is still my favourite.

How naughty is this book's contents likely to be?  Somewhere around See your chest, or even as far as the Parisian knocking shop Be Our Guest?

One of my favourite scientific parodies has to be The Genome Song, though there's always the rather odd N-Dimensional Space

And in the "just plain unusual" section, here's a full chess game in parody.

It's kind of hard to choose just a handful...

I think this should be split into sections, and if that happened it would be much easier to propose a potential parody to fit within a section. Any thoughts on how long the book would be? How about a target audience?

Parodies included should be well-known, but who defines well-known? There aren't many original songs that all potential customers are going to be familiar with, and it wouldn't make much sense to exclude parodies of recent popular songs just because lots of people don't listen to new music.

I'd stay away from whatfreaks-style parodies, but you can't worry that a parody might offend somebody. There may not be an original song in the world that wouldn't upset anyone if they saw a parody of that song, regardless of content.

I'd propose some of my own parodies if the parody book proposal got accepted or at least seriously considered.

no idea yet... I'm probably going to put together a 20 - 30 page sample to see if I can get some interest from anyone.  At the very least, if no one is interested now, I still have something I can show to someone in the future if someone inquires about it in the future.

As much as I'd love to find out which of my songs Spaff would pick, I've always wanted an excuse to pick my own faves.  No idea which would work best in print, but I managed to get it down to ten:

Alzheimer  Rock And Roll
A Bear Named Pooh
Can Full 'O Mace
The Mailman Can
My Wife's Favorite Things
Over The Hill
Pee Our Test
That Don't Disgust Me Much
Three-Way
Wal-Mart

Also, I'm not one to bribe or anything, but if any of my songs are used, put me down for about ten zillion copies.

What a fantastic idea!

Now...what shall I throw into this great pot? Something that I like, something that has gotten a good response, something that is NOT self-referential, overly meta, or referring to another parodist. Let's take a quick look through my (albeit small) back catalog...

Can't Fill This Order
Fillings
Flat
Guhlee Mahn
I Have A Nasty Case Of Every Virus, Bug Conceivable
The Infomercial Song
Newbie Parodist
Queen Of Prom
You'd Better Go Hide Your Gut
You've Been Blessed (An Ode To Cults)

Okay, so I made two small exceptions for Flat and Newbie Parodist. But I couldn't pass them up!

By the way, where the hell is Kristof in this project? He is essential.

EDIT: I decided to make it an even ten.

Thanks for trying to give us one more medium in which to express ourselves.  I hope the book makes a lot of money for you.  Please consider including:

Hello Philip, Nice Armada

Thetis, Don’t Let Achilles Go Off to Invade Troy

If Shrek’s Mom Had Only Been Sterile

If there is going to be a small section for political song parodies (and I think there should be), please consider the following four parodies as representatives of the political right:

CBS

My Slick Husband Bill

Reviewing the Situation

ooohhh stu where's someone shaved my wife tonight  :\'( :\'(

wow Chucky - the temptation is to give you all of them....

Hedgery That's Shaped

thanks... not too late at all since I've done absolutely nothing towards it since posting this.  Not a good idea on my part, I don't want to wait too long, I just was very tired last weekend for some reason.

Aside from Saturday morning, my weekend looks wide open, so I'm going to try mocking something up Sunday I think.  I've spent most of this week trying to get my new software written for inthe80s.com, so I'm preoccupied with that too... ugh, I've got to stop trying to do everything at the same time.

If you're interested, respond with links to a few of your BEST parodies... stuff that got a good response that you like.  That way I at least can throw together a sample to throw out there to a few different people.

Ok, Monsieur Chucky, maybe you might include some of mine in your first AmIRight parody book, like:

"So Sick at Spongebob" - http://www.amiright.com/parody/2000s/neyo8.shtml
"On The G-Unit Candy Shop" - http://www.amiright.com/parody/misc/shirleytemple0.shtml
"My Hats (The Madeline Song)" - http://www.amiright.com/parody/2000s/blackeyedpeas49.shtml
"Hilton Cried" - http://www.amiright.com/parody/2000s/parishilton2.shtml

And maybe you should add some of my own album covers, under the LPG-Unit name, of course. Anyway, how come my album cover's not up on AmIRight, even though I already submitted it? I know I didn't put inappropriate stuff on it, but why? Server problems? I hope you may answer this... - Blake = )

not sure... I'll certainly try to pitch at least the album cover parodies... a CD is a totally different ball of wax.

First, there is no book -- yet.  It's simply a proposal Chucky is putting together to see if they want to publish a book.  It's not easy to convince someone to publish a book.  So he has to use the stuff he thinks will give him the best chance of getting accepted; he really can't afford to play favorites even if he wanted to.  I'm as excited as anyone else about this possibility, but the last thing we want to do is give him some entitlement attitude to deal with on top of everything else.  I hope I'm not speaking out of turn; I'm just trying to help.  Thank you for your understanding.

thanks tomario  :)

I didn't include that one (although it's one of my favourites) because I thought it might be a bit risque for a book, and I wanted to pick the 20 of mine that would most suit a book, not my 20 favourites

...and judging by its reception in the S-Comp I think my judgement was correct ;)

Yes I understand, obviously this sin't guaranteed, but if it were to be, and there is a good parody by the author, it would make sense to give them a place.

Its all a Big IF at the moment though.

a CD is a totally different ball of wax.

Very much so: there's no claim to copyright (as in for the OS, rather than the parody) when all that's repeated is the parody lyrics, but you'll start having to work out royalties for whoever wrote the original music if doing a CD.  Any potential publisher would need the thought of much moolah coming in to make that headache worthwhile, and I'd be very surprised if it'll sell *that* many copies.

Kind of interesting to see some themes highlighted there.

I got so distracted with the site, battling spammers and other issues the past month I just haven't given enough thought to the book.  I know the first task I really need to do, is identify themes that could be used to organize the parodies around (hence the reason I asked for Christmas ones at one point).

If people would like to take a break from suggesting parody ideas and suggest themes that could be used, that might help motivate me some more.

Nice idea Chucky. I'm in if it's really a possibility.

For the purposes of planning, I'd first try to decide how many pages you want this book to be. One of the things you'd need to decide is if you want parodies that would need multiple pages just due to their length, or if you'd want to stick with short and sweet in terms of parody length. Personally, even though some of the best technical works on the site are set to long songs, it might be easier to have mostly short, one-page parodies. That way you could include more songs in the first place. Plus, in the design process you could play with the font size of each parody individually and make better use of the page size there.

I'm not sure how I'd arrange it, but for a compilation, I'd arrange the parody order in the book by either 'original author of the song' or the 'original song title'. That would make it easier for someone to search for an original song they know. I might be in the minority here, but I think someone picking up the book would be more interest in the original song that's being parodied than in the subject matter when they first look at it, so I'd organize the book based on that.

Oh, and if it's cool to nominate songs that aren't yours to be in the book, I'd like to nominate Claude's:

'A Bear Named Pooh'

Just thought I'd throw that in there.

Short and sweet is certainly best, since you should never have to turn the page during the same song for singing purposes. After a little thought, I agree with the organizing by original song, too. The original songs should be very well known by the general public - big hits from the last few years along with classics from the last fifty. To decide which type of song to concentrate on first it might be best to choose which demographic to target. Who is most likely to buy a book of song parodies after seeing one in a bookstore or online?

To decide which type of song to concentrate on first...

I was thinking purely alphabetical in terms of layout. Just have the book open with an in-depth index of the different original songs being parodied and the pages you can find them. Heck, you could also have an index either in the beginning or at the end that lists songs by original authors as well as by original song title. That way the user could immediately browse and find the songs that they know personally.

Subject: Re: An amIright PARODY book? Would you be interested in contributing?

Maybe everyone should just be allowed to pick up to ten (because some people will suggest their entire catalog) parodies that they think would be good for a parody book, and more decisions could be made after those are in. Parodies shouldn't be picked due to theme, but based on quality and potential to appeal to people who might buy the book. That means parodies in a first (hopefully of many) parody book    shouldn't require uncommon (Academic & obscure pop culture) knowledge to appreciate the parody. There would hopefully be a separate book for (good) parodies that fit that description in the future. Ditto for parodies centered around innuendo (that could probably fill several books), and site-specific parodies should stay on the site and not be in any book.

If handled properly, I see this idea as having the potential to rival the success of the Onion. If it's botched (Publishing with no marketing plans, putting the interests of the writers over those of the general public) then failure is virtually guaranteed. Doing everything right still doesn't guarantee anything, but I still think it's 100% worth a shot.

definitely not... I still haven't done much more than ask for suggestions at this point.

First step on my part is to write a "proposal" with a sample of maybe 10-20 pages

Second step is to contact my current publisher and see if they have any interest.  If not, I have a contact at another publisher to try before just randomly approaching other publishers.

I haven't done much on the book front, mostly because the site has required a ton of work the past few months.  The spammers were really gumming things up, plus all the problems with my hosting company.  I've rewritten maybe 75% of the stuff used to run the site in the past month or so.  The editors probably see the largest changes, since their sections should all look much nicer, and be easier to use.  Hopefully it's encouragement for them to want to keep working on them.

The other reason I haven't done much, is I'm still unsure of what it's going to look like.  I know I don't want it arranged alphabetically.  I know I want to also include other parts of the site, and I'm not sure if they should be directly tied into the parodies chosen, or just stand on their own.  On the plus side, not rushing to do it, gives me more time to think about it, and more thoughts, etc.

For size, I'm thinking the format of the pages should be larger than the misheard lyrics book (which is roughly the size of a CD), with a similar page count (192 pages).  Parodies should be roughly 60-75% of the pages.  A parody should be able to fit on a single page, so some of the epic parodies might not be suitable, unless it's really long and can be used on two facing pages.  It should also be bound like a music book, with some kind of spiral binding that allows it to be left open.

I think a Mad Magazine styled "create your own song parody" section would be good, maybe a couple of those.  I don't think they've trademarked those, though I'm sure a publisher could figure that out if they decided to do the book.  If you haven't seen one of those, they provide ten spots where you can pick one of ten different phrases for each spot so you can fill them in Mad Libs style.  Heck, maybe even a mad libs type of thing might be cool to through in a couple of as well.

I already mention some of the other things you discussed in a post I just made, but the more I think of this statement, the more I think it makes sense.  A prospective customer is going to pick up a book and see if a song by a group they like is represented (REPRESENT YO!).

So while it probably makes sense for the table of contents or something to list things out for particular categories, I think you're right, the book should get laid out by original performer.

Oh, and if it's cool to nominate songs that aren't yours to be in the book, I'd like to nominate Claude's:

might not hurt if people asked someone else to pick a favorite of another writer on the site.  Maybe a separate thread for that would help.

I think the major general's song is much more well known than desolation row, but leaving that out might not be such a bad idea either. Writers who did really rell with that song probably did just as well with better known originals. Of course this is all moot unless/until Chucky gets his original proposal accepted anddecides on an official submission policy.

Obviously people are seriously interested in contributing...hopefully someone is seriously interested in publishing.

yeah.  right now I'm just trying to write a proposal.  With the misheard lyrics book, the publisher wanted mostly current stuff from the past ten years.  If a publisher wants me to do this project, they'll probably have a target audience they want, and will dictate what they think will work for who it targets.  There could even be more than one book, etc.  Just have to get to a point where I can at least whip up something to show someone >grin<

You're more than welcome to use any of those or any of the other hundred and however many more parodies I've done for free if you'd like.

ChuckyG please feel free to use anything of Mike Armstrong's as you may wish. We'd be honored. Don't even think about paying us. Just make sure if a book is ever released we get signed copies. ;D I'd casually mention "I'm published" in every conversation I entered. That said, here are a few I think stand out in our lineup.

"Molester Guy" (American Pie) http://www.amiright.com/parody/70s/donmaclean2.shtml
"He's Always a Clipboard QB" (She's Always a Woman to Me) http://www.amiright.com/parody/80s/billyjoel87.shtml
"Meet the Press" (Be Our Guest) http://www.amiright.com/parody/90s/disney29.shtml

Chucky, I haven't read the replies to your book question, so if someone has already mentioned this idea, forgive the repetition.

I would think your best bet for commercial success would be to take the most famous original songs on the site, the Original Songs most likely to be recognized by the reading public, and submit the best parody of that song, or 2 or 3 of the best parodies of that song.

As has been proven here over and over, great parodies to relatively unknown songs go under appreciated when readers don't know the original.

You could choose your OS es by nomination and voting from contributing authors here, or just pick the ones YOU know best...ones everybody will recognize .

Same thing with the 2 or 3 parodies you include to each OS....author vote, or the ones you find funniest.

When pitching your book, give a sample to the book editor of songs he is sure to recognize....you can't go wrong with this strategy.

Whatever you decide, good luck with it. You deserve success for all you have done here. :)

:)      ;D  I LOVE this idea!  I would love to have my work be part of a book!

I recommend you divide the parodies by category: politics (left/right as you suggested); everyday life; headlines; sports; celebrities; movies and TV shows; holidays; religion; jobs/careers; romance; pets; family...and so forth.

You could set aside special pages for special categories, such as parodies of Beatles tunes, hymns, classical music, or show music.  Parodies that are mini-plays or mini-operas (like my "Mandate My Ass" or "Elections") could be a special category, too.

You know what would be a lovely addition?  A CD of some of the best parodies!

In the index you could cross-reference by Original Performer, Parody Author, and Decade--as you do on this website.

Here are some of mine:

"Love Client Number 9" ("Love Potion Number 9")
http://www.amiright.com/parody/60s/thesearchers7.shtml

"Knight Bus" ("Nightshift")
http://www.amiright.com/parody/80s/thecommodores2.shtml

"Right-Wng Fantasy" ("Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves")
http://www.amiright.com/parody/70s/cher33.shtml

"My Eye Is on My Waistline" ("His Eye Is on the Sparrow")
http://www.amiright.com/parody/misc/traditional1465.shtml

"Bleep! the Mets!" ("Meet the Mets")
http://www.amiright.com/parody/60s/newyorkmets2.shtml

"Crappy Christmas (War Continues)" ("Happy Xmas (War is Over)")
http://www.amiright.com/parody/70s/johnlennon48.shtml

"Pray" ("Stay")
http://www.amiright.com/parody/60s/fourseasons5.shtml

"Mandate My Ass" ("Earache My Eye")
http://www.amiright.com/parody/70s/cheechandchong2.shtml

"Ah, Fallujah!" ("Hallelujah Chorus")

"Yankees Got Run Over by the Red Sox" ("Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer")
http://www.amiright.com/parody/80s/elmopatsy4.shtml

I may add more.  I'm being called away!

I happily submit my only SOTM winner

Yum Deities! (Under The Sea - Disney)
http://www.amiright.com/parody/80s/disneysthelittlemermaid3.shtml

And a couple other that did well

(I Need) Cash, I'll Hock It (Brass In Pocket - The Pretenders)
http://www.amiright.com/parody/80s/thepretenders12.shtml

Epic Mount O' Doom (Electric Avenue - Edddy Grant)
http://www.amiright.com/parody/80s/eddiegrant5.shtml

Implants and Puffed-up Lips (Incense and Peppermints - Strawberry Alarm Clock)
http://www.amiright.com/parody/60s/strawberryalarmclock10.shtml

And as an additional suggestion:  I've read enough parodies on amiright to figure that you could make sections or chapters based on the theme of the parody or the choice of OS.  Like maybe a section of parodies of Disney songs, a section of parodies about popular movies (Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones),  a section about sports parodies, that kind of thing.

What the hey?  I was not writing or viewing the site during most of the time this thread went down.  Is it still in the works or has it died on the vine?  Chucky - You are more than welcome to use any of my 844 aimiright published parodies I have on the site as of this date and any future work I do.  I need no renumeration for anything of mine that is contributed.  Good luck to you on this endeavor if it is still in the works.  Could you please post something and give a progress report on this?

I got so swamped with the misheard lyrics books, I put it on hold for awhile.  I was also on contract for a second misheard lyrics book, and wanted to see how the first one did before trying more book pitches on different subjects.

The hard part is trying to come up with a central theme that would make for an interesting book.  Something where the title will also help to grab the attention of the reader as well.  I have to then compile a few dozen pages and shop it around to publishers.  Not sure if my current publisher would be interested, they were against putting any parodies in the books I did so far.  So that makes it even more difficult, since I will need to blindly approach publishers.

I figure I'll look over my notes in another month or so and start working on a couple different proposals to shop around now that book #2 is almost 100% finished.

Sounds like a great idea and honor, if selected. A couple of my non-political ones are:

Comfortably Dumb - parody of Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb
http://www.amiright.com/parody/70s/pinkfloyd284.shtml

The Twitter - parody of The Boxtops' The Letter
http://www.amiright.com/parody/60s/theboxtops31.shtml

If using political parodies, I offer:

Impeachable Guy - parody of Don McLean's American Pie
http://www.amiright.com/parody/70s/donmclean139.shtml

Stuck Inside the White House with the Bailout Blues Again - parody of Bob Dylan's Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again.
http://www.amiright.com/parody/60s/bobdylan219.shtml

Good luck and glad to see lots of support - the site has many great authors and lots of funny parodies.

I'd be very willing to contribute, and no, Chuck, you don't have to pay me. Just give name credit to Caleb, AKA DJ Blaze, for this one: http://www.amiright.com/parody/80s/chicago13.shtml
