Subject: New voting widget - test it on one of mine before I make it live for everyone

Written By: ChuckyG on 04/16/07 at 4:50 pm

http://www.amiright.com/parody/80s/parody.shtml

Vote whatever you want (no, you don't have to read it)... just let me know if it works ok for you.

I'm going to roll this out on the parodies tomorrow, then the misheard lyrics and album cover parodies a few days later.

well colour me dizzy - that's fantastic

following on from my thanks for doing the "no-refresh" on the comments, I double the thanks for doing it for the votes as well - this, and the new 3-digit code (thanks even more for that) are gonna make things way way better

:) :) :)

Seemed to work for me.  Took my vote, asked to confirm, then posted my vote, while removing the voting option.

Interesting! I click the vote button and the vote gets tallied right away!

(For the record, I voted 4-4-4 on it.)

I double the thanks for doing it for the votes as well

yeah...the "separate page" thingy is not needed IMO

ok, that's a good sign that it's working, and I'm glad it's easier to use.

The voting script is as old as the site, which is pretty old by Internet standards, so time for an upgrade.  Not much of an upgrade either, most of the work is handled in javascript, I just ended up commenting out part of the old script on the server to make it work.

I did some more changes, fixed some minor issues with Firefox.  I'm going to populate across the entire site now.  Hope it doesn't break anything >grin<

That'll solve the repeated abused votes.

I guess the same would go for the misheard lyric artists?

Beauty of a script Chucky--I love it.

I see it no longer takes you to the "thank you for your vote page", rather it records it and leaves you on the parody. Sweet!

Speaking of new widgets, I noticed a parody yesterday that had words in italics/emphasis. It appears that all HTML is now allowed in parody fields, including stuff like images:

<a href="http://www.zipperfish.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.zipperfish.com/free/quizimages/jailbait2004-3.jpg" width="401" height="208" border="0"></a>

Paste that into the parody field, and it displays a full picture and link to that site. I'd love love LOVE to keep bold and italic HTML (as well as big, subscript, superscript, and font size adjustments), but images, marquee (that works too), source codes, etc. probably should be removed asap.

Since I review everything submitted, I'd probably prevent something like that from making it all the way through anyways (so no fear of viruses)

I did notice the italics the other day, and let it go through anyways.  You are right though, that I should go back to stripping most everything I can.

and yes, the misheard lyrics artists voting script is getting changed over (probably today around lunchtime) as well as the photoshop voting script (which is actually a little on the buggy side to begin with).

I doubt it will prevent abuse votes, but it might slow some people down

I've noticed Latest Comments is taking a long time to update (doesn't update for hours, when it used to seem to update every half hour or so) - is that a glitch?

yes.  not sure what is causing it, but anything that used to update automatically isn't working anymore.  In the Unix world, it's known as a cron job, and it appears the cron jobs aren't working at the moment on any of the sites.

Could be the bypass line.  Or permissions  :)

Chucky,

This parody today: http://www.amiright.com/parody/80s/hannababaraproductions0.shtml

had numerous comments on it (6 or so) and 5 votes - 3 111 and 2 555 if I remember correctly. Now it is showing no comments and one 555 vote. I saw the other comments as well as made one myself (as well as cast one of the low votes), and nothing was inappropriate. I can't fathom any reason why you'd wipe the votes and comments on this parody, so I can only conclude that there is a bug with the new voting/comment system.

Other parodies today are unaffected.

hmmm... I deleted that parody.  No idea why it's still there.  It's pretty bad, and it's also a short theme song which I usually don't allow with the regular parodies.
