Subject: Decathlon: Mark Two???

Written By: Matthias on 09/13/07 at 10:21 am

Anybody intrested in having another session of The Decathlon?
All new genres, and topics!!!

Or is everybody too bogged down with Artistry? SOTM? and ABC?

I personally have plenty of freetime to run and participate within a competition like this, but I need others to join in with me. This cannot be like me and Agrimorfee's "Amiright: Our Musical", because I will actually need people to be willing to participate within this.

It's all up to you guys? I'm just tossing the idea out there. Do we want another session? I personally do, which is why I'm starting this thread, but what do the rest of you think?

Here's a list of genres I think we should test out if you guys are at all intrested in even starting this...

1. Ska: Reel Big Fish, Less Than Jake, ect.
2. Disco: Bee Gees, Kool and the Gang, ect.
3. Techno/ Dance: Prodigy, Cascada, ect.
4. New Wave: The Police, Devo, ect.
5. British Invasion: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, ect.
6. Comedy: Weird Al, Flight of the Concords, ect.
7. Grunge: Alice In Chains, Nirvana, ect.
8. Blues/ Emo: Blues Brothers, Jimmy Eat World, ect.
9. Beach/ Surf: Beach Boys, Jimmy Buffet, ect.
10. Motown: The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, ect.

If you guys have other genres you want to try out just let me know. This list isn't permanent, I'm just trying to make it different than last years.

I like the idea of another Decathalon--though I disagree with a couple of genres. . .
Ska belongs, it doesn't get done enough imho
Disco is a tough round, good choice
Techno similarly is a tough round--good choice
Grunge is a crowd favorite here
Motwon is creative
New Wave-why not

Now the others

Blues/Emo--?--They are two totally different genres, sorry, but um nope. . .Blues are kinda stretching on a parody genre in my opinion, sure some can be done, but most Blues songs I've heard aren't good parody targets, though I love the genre, perhaps Emo/Punk instead?

British Invasion and Beach/surf----Maybe it's just me, but to me those two genres sound similar. . .I'd prefer them to be one round rather than spreading across two rounds, I think perhaps considering 'Epic' as a round to replace one or the other would be a good idea.  Epic songs could be the closing round (By epic I mean songs of great length like 7:30 or longer)

Comedy: Please no---no--I mean we are parodist doing comedy songs, this one genre would probably keep me out, if non of the other changes in my opinion happen, this is one I simply would not want to do. . .Most comedy that makes the radio is either impossible to improve upon or parody, which really shouldn't be parody target, so I don't like that genre being in this type of event. . .I think perhaps 'R&B/Hip Hop' would be a good replacement for it since right now R&B  is largely not represented, and when people do target that genre (R&B or Hip Hop) they target Rap, not the Hip Hop or R&B sides

But good idea all and all, and I like most the genre ideas.

I like the idea of the Epic round, but R&B / Hip-Hop was used in the original Decathlon if I do remember correctly

I was also thinking Indie for a round, but that's used in Artistry
As well as Metal, I think we can tackle Metal and that wasn't really used in the original it was more of a general rock in the original

Hey now, so is Motown--I certainly don't mind Indie appearing.  .. Metal is a good idea too though, I mean, if you are up after 9 tonight, lets talk. . .I like the general idea, just certain rounds not so much.
