Subject: Any interest in a new parody authors t-shirt/notebook/mousepad?

Written By: ChuckyG on 03/14/08 at 11:54 am

The old design is nearly 3 years old now.... I'm not certain I have the time, but I figure it's been a while since the last design was done.

Not really sure how many authors have joined up since June 2005 (those people would not be included in the old design).

This time around it's going to be 25 or more, that will be 255 names.  Last time it was 13 or more, which would be 477 names, too many for a design that needs to be printed small as well as large.

If no one is interested, I won't bother of course.  Not that many of the old design sold anyways.  I just want to make sure if there are new authors on the site, and they wanted to buy something, they would have a proper chance.

I'm an old author, but I'd be interested  :)

My wife and I loved the Ts! Maybe with an updated design we could also get a toddler size as well?

as long as cafepress carries them now (and I believe they do)... not sure if it will look good small though, there will be a lot of stuff to fit on there.  Small images might just look like a big smudge or something.

I'm also going to make sure it can be put on black now as well.  Black shirts weren't yet an option on cafepress the last time I did one.  It's also not going to be as square this time either.

That'd be cool--how about one that features the regulars over here, that'd be less names--and they are probably the people most interested in such a product--like a AmIRight product based on 'active members of 2008' type thing.

I'd buy that - might as well have a shirt for my parody obsession, as I got a shirt with the Decepticon logo the other week ;)

I was going to work on it this weekend, but I've been recovering from a cold that never ends.  And watching the child every moment he's awake (or so it seems).

I've got some ideas, but I'll probably have to wait a few weeks

I know that feeling (both the never-ending cold, and watching the child every moment they're awake).  Trust me  ;D

Please do, Chucky. I'll buy a shirt and mousepad at least. You might want to leave the old design up as well.

Of course, if you don't have much time, you could always go with the following design:

SPAFF
(and the rest)

well I gave it a go tonight, but the idea just didn't seem to pan out... I started with the top 50 authors in a big font, planning on putting the next 200 or so in a smaller font, but when I finished with the top 50, it seemed like I wouldn't be able to squeeze the smaller names in there right.  I've attached the aborted attempt before I spent more time on it.

I've got some other ideas, that might work a little better.

If the focus is on the top 50, I better write a bunch of parodies real quick so I can be seen:)  ( I think I ranked in the 90s somewhere don't feel like counting to see where that is)

One question, do you have to include those that are banned or those that haven't posted anything in over two years?  Just a thought because I don't know a lot of those people . . .I know Fitu though. . .:)

I did last time... just pulled everyone, rather than worry about mistakes.  I planned on doing everyone that made at least 25 parodies.

I have an idea on how to do it that might work better anyways.  Will have to wait until I get a free night again

I like that idea, Dave... maybe a each year a design with the contributors from the previous year, like a "Parody Authors 2007" design available in early 2008, and so on. Since Chucky has nothing else to do I'm sure he can make new merchandise every year  ;).

Ooooh. . .I do that little countdown on my site at the end of the year marking the most *active parodists* of the previous year, I could post those results here and that way we'd only include the ones who really are active. . .last year it only took 11 parodies, not even quite one a month, to make the top 100. . .Rex you are truly wonderful reminding me about my thought processes (sometimes I have too many and one or two escape me)

I see two ways to go about this, depending on the design:

1. You could create a design that holds X number of names, say for example 30, and each year have "top 30" merchandise.

2. You could create a design that can accommodate a variable number of names (or create a custom design each year), and each year have "parodists with X or more parodies" merchandise.

There are other criteria that could be used to decide the names, too, like "contest winners" (anyone who got a podium).

I may be interested in a shirt.  Is there a ballpark figure on the retail cost?  I like BAD's idea best using his stats for the names that have posted the most parodies in 2008.  Then do it again in 2009, etc...

the most active idea is a good one.. I don't think I'd limit it the people with over x amount of parodies, but instead limit it to anyone with over x amount of parodies submitted for that year.

If it's like 100 names instead of 300-400 it'll be a lot easier for me to create a cool design with them too.  It'll also give me an excuse to wait until the end of the year to do it... maybe make the cutoff the end of November, so people can purchase them for Christmas presents.

The cost would be under $20 bucks... I might try a different company than cafepress, I have an account I've never used at spreadshirt, which might be useful.  Depends one whether people are more interested in t-shirts, or more generic stuff like mousepads and notebooks.

I can also write some code for the parody index script to spit out a list (and keep it current) of who will be appearing on the tshirt for the year.

hey, this is a REALLY good idea overall.  wish I thought of it >grin<

well, I do occasionally think about making a new tshirt for the authors, and even tried a design idea, but lost steam when it proved too unwieldy for the amount of names I was trying to shove into the design.  So hopefully this will help re-invigorate me.

you should have mentioned to me that you could use something like that... I'd have done it sooner.

here is what the software spit out for this year.  I'll clean it up later.  Sorted by author name, I can also sort it by # submitted.  I would have thought there were more authors with ten or more than this.  Guess a lot of new authors just do one or two.
